Veterinary Student Externship – Blue Springs Animal Hospital
United Veterinary Care invites veterinary students to complete an externship at Blue Springs Animal Hospital. This clinical experience allows you to apply classroom learning in a real animal hospital setting.
OverviewOur externships are designed exclusively for veterinary students in their clinical years (typically 3rd or 4th year) at AVMA‑accredited schools. We provide stipends to offset travel and lodging costs, unless prohibited by your veterinary school.
Eligibility Requirements- Current veterinary student at an AVMA‑accredited school
- Priority scheduling for students in their clinical years on official externship blocks for credit
- Proof of professional liability insurance (SAVMA members qualify for no‑cost insurance via the SAVMA Member Benefit and Resources link)
Blue Springs Animal Hospital is a large, multi‑doctor general practice in a suburb of Kansas City, Missouri. The hospital offers advanced medical and surgical care across species. Specialties include dermatology, orthopedics, theriogenology/reproduction, oncology, and internal medicine. Orthopedic surgery on‑site includes TPLO, fracture repair, and MMP‑TTA.

You will actively participate in surgical cases, dental procedures, emergencies, sick patient workups, and routine medical appointments. You will be supervised by an experienced veterinarian and support staff who will serve as mentors. You are encouraged to choose one case per week to research and discuss with a supervising veterinarian.
We value active participation, client interaction, and collaboration in case discussions. Externs are expected to listen to patient history, conduct preliminary exams, and formulate diagnostic and treatment plans under supervision.
