This position supervises the operation of laboratory services in assigned areas by supervising personnel and overseeing day-to-day workflow.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education, Certification, and/or Licensure
  • Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology, Cytotechnology, Histotechnology (Medical Laboratory Science), or related field
  • Associate's Degree in Medical (Clinical) Laboratory Technology or related field (if no bachelor's)
  • Current licensure as required by the state in which services will be provided:
  • WV:
    Licensed in one of the following:
    Medical Laboratory Technician, Medical Laboratory Scientist, Cytotechnologist, Histotechnologist
  • PA:
    No state license requirement
  • OH:
    No state license requirement
  • MD:
    No state license requirement
  • Experience:

    Four (4) years of experience as a Medical Technologist, Medical Laboratory Technician, Histotechnologist, or Cytotechnologist
Preferred Qualifications
  • One of the following national certifications through the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT):
  • Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT)
  • Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS)
  • Cytotechnologist (CT)
  • Histotechnologist (HTL)
Core Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist the Managers in the supervision of all lab areas to assure appropriate personnel coverage and ensuring adequate staffing to support the hospital's mission of patient care.
  • Participate in the orientation of new staff and provide input for staff's annual performance appraisals, disciplinary actions, and terminations based on documented performance within the institution's timelines.
  • Coordinate and ensure all Reference Laboratory specimens are sent to the appropriate reference laboratory and that results are received within specified time frames.
  • In conjunction with LIS personnel and technical staff, coordinate all computer downtime activities according to standard operating procedures.
  • Operate and supervise laboratory equipment in line with standard operating procedures, promptly preparing patient specimens in accordance with policy.
  • Solicit and provide input for the development and/or revision of standard operating procedures and department policies.
  • Maintain working knowledge of current hospital and lab administrative and safety policies/procedures and the current Collective Bargaining Agreement (if applicable), applying these consistently and seeking management guidance when needed.
  • Respond, research, and answer customer inquiries; perform various customer service duties in line with hospital and laboratory policies.
  • Monitor customer service activities and day-to-day specimen processing/Phlebotomy activities to identify problems and provide solutions.
  • Request input and direction from the Medical Director(s), Administrative Director, and/or Manager(s) regarding technical issues, employee training, quality assurance, and quality control procedures.
  • Organize time, materials, and resources efficiently, prioritizing laboratory requests by workload and staffing to provide optimal patient care and efficiency.
  • Participate in staff meetings, in-services, etc. to disseminate information to laboratory staff, allied health personnel, and physicians.
  • Maintain laboratory communication and ensure staff are updated on new policies and procedures in a timely manner.
  • Review and evaluate quality control records and test results to determine analytical errors, shifts, trends, and correlate data for quality patient test results.
  • Assist in organizing time, materials, and resources to prioritize laboratory requests across all sections within the division for optimal efficiency.
  • Ensure daily workload completeness within established turnaround times, flexing organization of work based on test ordering status and reviewing pending results.
  • Initiate effective communication with supervisory personnel and all other laboratory personnel, other hospital departments, and patients/public to resolve problems in support of patient care.
  • May participate in technical and theoretical instruction, supervision and evaluation of residents and students of the School of Medicine per laboratory policies.
  • Physical Requirements
    • Ability to sit for extended periods of time.
    • Must be able to lift or pull up to 25 pounds.

    • Cognizant of environmental factors, infection control issues and maintaining a safe environment.
    • Often a loud, noisy environment.
    • Ability to tolerate foul or unpleasant specimen odors.
    Skills and Abilities
    • Demonstrate competency in serving different patient populations:
      Neonates, Pediatrics, Adolescents, Adults, and Geriatrics.
    • Knowledge of both medical technology and management principles.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

    Must be willing to work at both Princeton and Bluefield campuses and be willing to work any shift during urgent situations.

    Call hours as appropriate.

    Oversees staff and ensures staff competency in assigned areas.
