Overview

Lead Electrical Maintenance Technician

The Lead Electrical Maintenance Technician serves as the on-site coordinator and crew supervisor for all electrical work. They coordinate the scheduling and execution of Preventative, Predictive, Corrective Maintenance, and Warranty work. The technician balances administrative planning, scheduling, and documentation with field supervision, acting as the first line of supervision for electrical crews.

They work with Electrical Maintenance Technicians to ensure electrical maintenance is completed safely, on schedule, and within manufacturer’s recommendations.

Responsibilities include:

  • Installation, maintenance, testing, calibration, and commissioning of electrical systems and components.
  • Acting as “Employee in Charge” on some jobs, ensuring efficient planning and safe completion.
  • Performing other assignments as required, with some supervision involved.
  • Reading and interpreting one-line drawings, schematics, and service documents, including manufacturer’s instructions and manuals.
  • Maintaining personal protective equipment (PPE), hand tools, and test equipment.
  • Ensuring personal safety and the safety of others by understanding and complying with safety policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Identifying and wearing appropriate PPE as required by the task.
  • Adhering to strict Standard Operating Procedures and Switching Plans.
  • Utilizing troubleshooting tools such as digital multi-meters, clamp-on ammeters, power quality meters, infrared scanners, and circuit tracers.
  • Performing simple protective relay calibration and commissioning.
  • Verifying control wiring through point-to-point testing.
  • Executing equipment switching, isolation, LOTO, zero volt checks, and grounding.
  • Performing maintenance, tests, and inspections on equipment including high voltage SF6 circuit breakers, medium voltage vacuum circuit breakers, low voltage power circuit breakers, switchboards, panel boards, ground systems, motor starters, VFDs, cables, switches, ground fault systems, transformers, and associated equipment.
  • Applying knowledge of NETA MTS testing standards.
  • Accurately recording field data using Power DB and Maximo.
  • Assisting with start-up services on switch gear and electrical systems up to 138 kV.
  • Conducting safety meetings as needed.
  • Ensuring compliance with environmental and safety policies.
  • Maintaining strong team and client relationships.
  • Required Skills:

    Must be capable of achieving and maintaining TS/SCI security clearance. A high school diploma or GED, coupled with an Electrical Journeyman license or a related Technical Degree/Certificate (e.g., AS in Electrical/Electronics, Instrumentation, Controls, or NETA Level II or NICET Level II in Electrical Power Testing) is required.

  • Minimum five years’ experience in facilities maintenance with a thorough understanding of electrical systems, controls, generators, and life safety systems, preferably in data centers or complex mission-critical environments.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to efficiently schedule and execute work in a dynamic environment with extensive equipment.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting complex technical instructions, plans, blueprints, and schematics.
  • Strong knowledge of NEC, NFPA 70E, NETA maintenance practices, and quality control procedures.
  • Ability to evaluate electrical systems, perform damage assessments, estimate maintenance needs, diagnose malfunctions, and employ testing techniques.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize workload with minimal supervision.
  • Capability to work in confined spaces, on ladders, and lift equipment over six feet above ground.
  • Compliance with all licensing and certification requirements.
  • Physical ability to lift at least 100 pounds at once and 60 pounds for extended periods.
  • Ability to work at heights up to 60 feet, climbing and maintaining balance on scaffolds, lifts, and ladders.
  • Good vision (corrected if necessary), color vision, hearing, and communication skills in English.
  • Abilities include:

  • Lifting at least 100 pounds at once and 60 pounds for extended periods.
  • Relocating a 12-foot stepladder without assistance.
  • Working at heights up to 60 feet, climbing and balancing on scaffolds, lifts, and ladders.
