The Mental Health Therapist II applies graduate‑level counseling skills/social work as independently licensed staff, as stipulated by the Ohio Counselor, Social Worker, and Marriage and Family Therapist Board. Duties include psychosocial assessment of individuals, adolescents, families, and groups and provision of graduate‑level clinical social work/counseling interventions as appropriate to client needs in the context of the department.
Responsibilities- Conduct initial comprehensive patient and family psychosocial assessment, and triage care accordingly.
- Communicate with staff regarding assessment, treatment/interventions and interdisciplinary care plan through documentation and meetings such as patient rounds.
- Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide competent care for the physical, psychological, social, educational, and safety needs of the patients served regardless of age.
- Provide case management for assigned patients, involving consultation and collaboration with hospital and community professionals and programs to deliver comprehensive care.
- Consistently use evidence-based trauma and risk assessment tools and apply crisis intervention skills when indicated; determine formally the need for a referral to the Emergency Department or a more suitable community agency.
- Complete ethical and timely documentation as expected by the department.

- Outpatient Add‑On:
Complete Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) interventions in addition to other clinical evidence-based treatment modalities to assist patient and families in completing individualized service plans. - PHP/IOP Add‑On:
Use of CBT and DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) through individual, group, and family therapy to support clients in achieving therapeutic goals. - PIRC Add‑On:
Conduct risk assessments, provide crisis interventions, triage intake calls, conduct preliminary diagnostic assessment over telephone, and develop and communicate crisis treatment plans with hospital and community professionals. - Substance Use Add‑On:
Use of CBT and other evidence-based practices such as Motivational Interviewing; involve family in therapy sessions and provide behavior modification techniques as clinically indicated.
- Experience with electronic medical record software, such as EPIC, is preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word) or similar software is required.
- Experience providing clinical services through telehealth is preferred.
- Education:
Master’s Degree in Social Work or Clinical Mental/Behavioral Health Counseling is required. - Certification:
Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW), Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC), or Licensed Independent Marriage & Family Therapist (IMFT) required. For SUD positions, LCDC II, LCDC III, or LICDC is preferred. - Years of relevant experience:
Minimum 3‑5 years of relevant experience. - Supervision endorsement from the Ohio Counselor, Social Worker, and Marriage and Family Therapist Board preferred.
- Must meet Akron Children’s Hospital Medical Staff Credentialing/Privileging criteria.
