SummaryThe Orthopedic Technician I works under the direct supervision of a Physician or Advanced Practice Provider, assisting in a patient's orthopedic plan of care. This position is responsible for maintaining patient flow, providing orthopedic patient care, and educating patients, patient families, and peers.
Responsibilities- Maintain patient flow, rooming, and assisting patients and family, while supporting the physician or APP.
- Assist in cast application or removal under provider supervision.
- Apply and adjust braces under provider supervision.
- Place orders in the EMR for radiographs, cast removal and application, and brace application per provider's last note, and obtain cosignature.
- Comprehend sterile techniques for wound care, pin removal, joint injections, and suture/skin staple removal.
- Complete patient documentation and encounter forms, answer questions, and provide printed materials as ordered.
- Document orthopedic pathways and charging for cast and brace applications.
- Observe and report patient progress and any complications to the Orthopedic Team.
- Educate patients and families on post-procedure care, follow-up appointments, and instructions for cast or splint care; provide guidance on dressing changes, exercises, and mobility training.
- Offer emotional support and ensure comfort and safety for patients and families dealing with fractures or orthopedic surgeries.
- Maintain and clean orthopedic equipment (casting tools, braces, splints), ensuring sterilization and functionality; keep rooms clean and organized.
- Adhere to regulations set by governing bodies including OSHA, HIPAA, and JACHO.
- Other duties as assigned.
Technical Expertise, Education and Experience details follow.
Technical Expertise- Basic medical terminology knowledge preferred.
- Excellent patient care and interpersonal skills.
- Follow instructions and work as part of a healthcare team.
- Stay organized and manage time effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience in healthcare, preferably orthopedics.
- Experience working at all levels within an organization required.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word); experience with EMR preferred.
- High School Diploma or equivalent required; completion of an allied health program (LPN, Medical Assistant, Athletic Trainer, Surgical Technician, Paramedic, or EMY Basic) preferred.
- BLS certification required.
- 0 years’ experience required; 1‑2 years’ experience preferred.
