Job DescriptionFacilitates Diabetes Self‑Management Education and Support (DSMES) programs in accordance with the American Diabetes Association’s recognized program standards. Provides Medical Nutrition Therapy individually and in group settings at Mercy Youngstown locations as needed. Evaluates the quality and outcomes of the DSMES program. Collaborates with other departments to provide nutrition education to poor and underserved populations. Trains and directs team dietitians and support staff in daily tasks, policies and projects related to the implementation of the DSMES program.
Develops and updates curriculum to ensure consistent education at all three Youngstown locations. Participants are primarily outpatient or community based, but may be inpatient on occasion.
- Participates in the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of educational activities and participants’ needs
- Demonstrates effective classroom and 1:1 clinical teaching skills
- Demonstrates professional accountability, growth, and development
- Evaluates the quality and outcomes of the DSMES program and all QI/PI projects
- Collaborates and works with healthcare professionals and departments to promote DSMES
- Completes administrative tasks as needed
- Completes a minimum of 15 hours of CEUs in diabetes yearly as well as all mandatory learning required by Mercy Health
Minimum Education
- 4‑year Bachelors Degree in Food and Nutrition or equivalent
- Certified Diabetes Educator or willing to take the certification when able
- Registered Dietitian (required)
- Licensed Dietitian in the state of Ohio (preferred)
- 3 or more years classroom teaching experience in diabetes education
- Computer literacy in Word, Excel, and electronic medical records
- Ability to coach others by providing supportive feedback, making decisions based on analysis of facts and general principles
