Summary of Primary FunctionThe Stepdown Registered Nurse (RN) delivers patient care utilizing the nursing process through data collection and assessment, identifying and prioritizing patient problems and needs, and evaluating the process and outcomes of nursing care in collaboration with the interdisciplinary care team. The RN coordinates patient teaching activities and collaborates with health team members.
Essential Job Functions- Conduct initial and ongoing patient assessments, analyze assessment data, create plans of care, implement treatments, and evaluate effectiveness.
- Administer medications in a safe manner consistent with the State of Practice and Bon Secours Mercy Health policies.
- Serve as point of contact for patients’ care coordination throughout hospital departments.
- Act as a patient safety advocate by participating in ongoing quality improvement.
- Advocate for patients in collaboration with spiritual care, palliative care, and ethics.
- Coordinate care with family members or caregivers.
- Clinically manage patients with multi‑system organ failure and/or multisystem trauma.
- Restore, support, promote, rehabilitate, or palliate patients using the AACN Synergy Model to maintain physiological, psychological, and psychosocial stability across the lifespan.
- Synthesize and prioritize information to take immediate evidence‑based, patient‑focused action using clinical judgment and inquiry.
- Anticipate and respond confidently to rapidly changing patient conditions.
- Respond to the unique needs of patients and families coping with unanticipated illness or injury and advocate for their quality‑of‑life choices.
- Practice in accordance with the BSMH Nursing Professional Practice Model.
- Current RN license in the state of employment or covered by the Nurse Licensure Compact (required).
- BLS Basic Life Support or ACLS Advanced Cardiac Life Support (preferred at hire; ACLS required within 6 months).
- CRRN Critical Care Registered Nurse (preferred).
- PCCN Progressive Care Certified Nurse (preferred).
- NIH Stroke Certification (preferred).
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (preferred).
Work Experience- 1 year RN experience (required).
- 6 months RN experience in an acute‑care hospital setting (preferred).
- EPIC Electronic Health Record (EHR) training (preferred).
- Critical Care Course (preferred).
- Assign patient care according to staffing levels and scope of practice.
- Facilitate learning experiences and provide education to staff and others; support quality improvement initiatives.
- Demonstrate clinical knowledge, skills, and competency for evidence‑based care.
- Perform comprehensive assessment of clinical condition and psychosocial needs.
- Safely and efficiently develop and implement care plans.
- Apply the nursing process in patient care delivery.
- Assess patient responses to treatment to evaluate effectiveness; revise plans accordingly.
- Assist patients and families in coping with illness.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to coordinate care.
- Exhibit strong interpersonal and communication skills.
