Overview

The following statements reflect the general duties considered necessary to describe the principal functions of the job as identified and shall not be considered as a detailed description of all the work requirements, which may be inherent in the position.

An athletic trainer is a healthcare professional who collaborates with physicians. The services provided by ATs include prevention, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention, and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions.

Athletic trainers work under the direction and supervision of a physician, either through standing protocols (off-line medical control) or through direct consultation.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Performing functions related to athletic injuries as set forth by the BOC, including prevention, assessment, treatment, and reconditioning.
  • Exhibiting proper taping, strapping, bracing, and fitting of athletic equipment.
  • Providing athletic training coverage for:
    • All home and away varsity football games
    • Home varsity athletic competitions
    • Practices
    • Away varsity competitions, as feasible
    • Other non-varsity home competitions
    • Marshall Medical Centers sponsored sporting events and tournaments
  • Acting as a liaison among team physicians, family physicians, medical specialists, schools, athletes, and families.
  • Maintaining accurate records of injuries, treatments, and documentation from physicians, including computer-based records.
  • Scheduling and attending pre-participation sports physicals, as determined by the school.
  • Providing coaches with proper documentation regarding their athletes.
  • Qualifications

    Education: Bachelor’s degree in athletic training or a closely related health field.

    Licensure/Certification:

    • BOC Certification
    • Licensure by the Alabama Board of Athletic Trainers
    • CPR/AED for Healthcare Provider Certification
