The Building Inspector I performs technical work inspecting building construction on-site for compliance with approved plans and applicable city and state codes. Under the supervision of the Chief Inspector, this position performs field inspections of work in progress or completed work, issues notices of violations for non-conformance, and re-inspects when deficiencies are corrected. A Building Inspector I is sub-classified per trade qualifications as either Structural, Electrical, Plumbing, or Mechanical.
Uncertified Inspectors are required to obtain a minimum of one valid Standard Inspector Certification within their probationary period in an appropriate sub-category from the State of Florida. As an essential employee, a Building Inspector I may be required to perform post-tropical cyclone damage assessment or other special work detail.

Building Inspector II performs technical work inspecting building construction on-site for compliance with approved plans and applicable city, state and federal codes. Under the supervision of the Chief Inspector, this position performs field inspections of complex development sites, systems, work in progress or completed work, issues notices of violations for non-conformance, and re-inspects when deficiencies are corrected. A Building Inspector II is sub-classified per trade qualifications as either Structural, Electrical, Plumbing, or Mechanical.
As an essential employee, a Building Inspector II will be required to perform post-tropical cyclone damage assessment or other special work detail. All Inspectors must meet the education and experience requirements, hold required licensure and certifications, and have additional inspection work experience, all as noted below.
- Inspects buildings under construction, alteration, or repair for compliance with applicable city, county, and state code requirements.
- Ensures materials are installed and buildings are constructed in substantial compliance with approved plans and specifications.
- Performs inspections on existing buildings for hazardous conditions; if hazards are identified, issues notices and follows up to ensure compliance with codes and regulations.
- Conducts final inspections and issues warnings or stop-work orders when construction does not comply with regulations regarding methods or materials.
- Communicates with and responds to inquiries from the public and staff regarding code requirements, review and inspection processes, and application comments in a timely and professional manner.
- Prepares accurate and detailed reports and maintains records of work performed.
- Applies appropriate regulations and codes with guidance from the Chief Inspector or Building Official.
- Testifies in court on code violation cases as necessary.
- Investigates complaints and responds to inquiries by taking appropriate action and following up.
- Utilizes related business systems, including software related to inspections, plan review, and communication. Demonstrates ability to learn evolving technologies.
- Participates in division rotation of on-call response for fire-incident inspections as needed.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Building Recertification Program (If assigned):
- Monitors deadlines for submittal of recertification reports.
- Ensures notices of submittal deadlines are prepared and timely issued.
- Responds to technical questions regarding the program and its requirements.
- Responds to complaints regarding building safety.
- Observes building inspections performed by engineers.
- Assists with the enforcement of code compliance.
- Compiles data and prepares reports related to the Building Recertification Program.
- Coordinates work with code compliance personnel, building inspectors, planning and zoning personnel, and other City staff.
- Attends Permitting and Construction Review Boards and Special Magistrate hearings regarding building inspection and code compliance cases.
Knowledge Of:
- Building construction, materials, and methods in at least one technical area (structural, electrical, mechanical, or plumbing).
- City and State building codes and related laws and ordinances.
- Standard office practices, procedures, software, and equipment.
- Business English, spelling, and commercial arithmetic.
