Staff Counsel – NCCI
About the PositionUnder the direction and supervision of senior attorneys, you gather information, identify and analyze legal issues of moderate complexity; provide advice and counsel to business unit personnel; review contracts—including software licenses—and conduct legal research and handle litigation matters. The role supports and advises various business units across the organization on legal, compliance, and regulatory matters impacting the company.
Work LocationThis role offers a flexible‑hybrid arrangement, with preference given to candidates living locally in the Boca Raton, FL area (St. Lucie County to the north to Miami‑Dade County to the south).
What You’ll Do- Meet with business unit personnel to gather facts and provide recommendations under the direction of senior attorneys.
- Review, draft, and negotiate contracts of moderate complexity—including software licenses and technology agreements.
- Conduct legal research of federal, state, and local laws and prepare legal memoranda with analysis and recommendations for multiple state projects.
- Work with outside counsel and/or carriers to manage corporate litigation matters; coordinate responses to subpoenas and attend depositions and mediations.
- Monitor and research federal, state, and local compliance, regulatory and legal issues affecting NCCI as a licensed workers‑compensation insurance rating/advisory and statistical organization.
- Research, draft and prepare articles and white papers for publication on the intranet and/or internet.
- Coordinate Legal Department projects (e.g., research and pleadings database, premium recovery/legal expenses benchmarking).
- Juris Doctorate from an ABA‑accredited law school and licensed to practice law in a particular state.
- Four (4) years of related experience (e.g., law firm, corporate legal department) with substantive experience in corporate, compliance, technology, and/or insurance law; experience in litigation management, drafting commercial contracts, and performing complex legal research.
- Legal knowledge and the ability to perform legal research, analysis and provide recommendations.
- Strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to present to various groups.
- Knowledge of computer‑related software and research databases (Westlaw, Lexis/Nexis).
- Ability to multitask and meet time‑sensitive deadlines.
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Knowledge of insurance regulation and compliance.
- Insurance‑related designations or certification.
