Overview
The Fire Rescue Services department is seeking a skilled technician to join the Emergency Vehicle Maintenance Team. This position performs complex mechanical work involving inspection, maintenance, and repair of gasoline- and diesel-powered fire apparatus, aerial ladder trucks, rescue units, and related emergency response vehicles and equipment. Responsibilities include diagnosing and repairing engines, hydraulic systems, suspensions, electrical systems, HVAC, and specialized portable equipment used in critical emergency operations.
The role ensures the operational readiness and continuity of Fire Rescue services to support emergency response and community protection.
- Perform diagnostics, repair, and specialty maintenance of medium- and heavy-duty fire apparatus and firefighting equipment.
- Carry out routine preventive maintenance on City vehicles according to manufacturer and City standards.
- Repair major vehicular systems and components including power plant, drive train, cooling, steering and suspension, electrical, hydraulic, air-conditioning, brakes and body, and computer systems.
- Repair belts, hoses, tires, lamps, tune-ups, and new vehicle preparations; maintain shop equipment and tools.
- Perform welding repairs and modifications/fabrications; road test vehicles to verify repairs.
- Diagnose malfunctioning systems and components; inspect vehicles for compliance with safety requirements.
- Perform road service repairs in Boca Raton and surrounding areas; complete preventive maintenance forms accurately; assist in shop cleanliness.
- Knowledge of methods, tools, and equipment used in repairing passenger cars, trucks, construction, and maintenance equipment; familiarity with scan tools, OEM software, and basic diagnostics.
- Knowledge of repairing and adjusting fire equipment, pumps, and apparatus.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent; two (2) years of experience repairing automotive power-driven and/or fire-related equipment.
- ASE certification in two or more of: T2 Truck – Diesel Engines; T3 Truck – Drive Train; T4 Truck – Brakes; T5 Truck – Suspension & Steering; T6 Truck – Electrical/Electronic Systems; T7 HVAC. Florida Class B CDL with up to six points in three years.
- Preferred EVTC certifications in F1–F6 (preferred: F1, F2, F3, F4, F5, F6).
- Selected candidate may be placed as Vehicle Technician I (B25) or Vehicle Technician III (B30) based on qualifications; criteria include experience with heavy trucks, municipal fleets, or emergency vehicles and additional certifications.
Abstain from tobacco products for at least one year prior to hire and during employment. Final placement based on qualifications, certifications, and demonstrated experience; candidates may be hired into either position accordingly.

Physical and Environmental DemandsRequired to perform tasks including ascending/descending ladders and stairs, working in tight spaces, lifting up to 50 pounds, operating machinery and vehicles, and maintaining regular attendance on site.
