The Physical Therapy Assistant, under the supervision of a licensed Physical Therapist, performs patient testing and/or procedures, administers a program of therapeutic exercise/treatment, and provides instruction and demonstration for patients. Additionally, the Assistant maintains accurate documentation on patient progress. May supervise PTA students. The position relies on education and training to complete responsibilities. Initially, it requires instruction and guidance to accomplish the job and should develop into working under general supervision.

• Patient Care:
  Patient care is documented daily and accurately using approved hospital and department documentation system reflecting patient response to treatment, actual performance, and treatment summaries if needed.
• Treatment plan is accurately followed 100% of the time as evidenced by chart review.
• Daily patient charges accurately completed, recording in treatment documentation, on daily charge sheet of department, as well as entering charges in appropriate billing as assigned per unit at all times.
• Non-routine changes in the treatment situation, discharge complications or other circumstances that require re-assessment or guidance are communicated to the primary PT immediately as evidenced by patient interdisciplinary interaction documentation.
• Patient and family/caregiver education concerning treatment plan, expected reactions to treatment, safe use of equipment, home programs, and follow up care are documented 100% of the time.
• Actively contributes to educational efforts of department (in-services, students/new hire orientation, QI) provided as evidenced by 1 in-service per year, documentation on competencies for students and new hires and QI data collection committee participation as assigned.
• Effectively follows and participates in scheduling functions by promptly accommodating patients for treatment as ordered and with fair distribution at all times.
• As a clinical instructor for PTA students on clinical internship provided mentoring, supervision, timely feedback and written evaluation of student's skills as evidenced by formal/written feedback/evaluation not less than twice during the student's internship.
• Observes and adheres to all departmental and hospital policies and procedures, and follows all safety, quality assurance and infection control standards.
• Productivity shall be measured using hours worked/units of service. The PTA shall, on a bi-weekly basis, be at or below .70 hrs/uos.
• Communicates with families and patients in a caring and compassionate manner on issues regarding patient progress and problems, available home programs, and the therapeutic process.
• Demonstrates collaboration in communication with team members and is open to feedback and receptive to change as evidenced by weekly team meetings and daily huddles.
• Appropriately delegates to and supervises performance of support personnel according to their level of training and in accordance with state law as needed.
• Other duties:
  Active participation in committees, department processes and special projects as assigned by supervisor is provided as requested. Other duties as assigned are completed.

• Graduate of Accredited Physical Therapy Assistant program

• BLS Certification
• Current Louisiana State licensed as Physical Therapy Assistant (temporary licensure allowed)
