The Process / Exhaust / Dry Mechanical Commissioning Engineer is responsible for planning, executing, and documenting commissioning activities for process mechanical, exhaust, and dry utility systems on mission-critical and high-technology construction projects. This role works closely with construction, controls, quality, safety, and operations teams to ensure systems are installed, tested, and turned over in accordance with design intent, client standards, and regulatory requirements.
Lead and execute commissioning activities for process mechanical, exhaust, and dry utility systems from pre-functional checks through system startup, functional testing, and turnover.
Review design documents, specifications, P&IDs, isometrics, equipment submittals, and control narratives to verify system intent and commissioning requirements.
Develop, review, and execute commissioning plans, procedures, checklists, and test scripts for:
Process Exhaust Systems (General, Acid, Solvent, Toxic)
Scrubbers, Abatement Systems, and Exhaust Fans
Dry Mechanical Utilities (CDA, Nitrogen, Vacuum, Process Interfaces)
Ductwork, dampers, valves, and exhaust control devices
Perform field walkdowns and verification inspections to confirm installation completeness, cleanliness, labeling, and safety compliance.
Coordinate and support equipment startup, balancing, and airflow testing, including pressure verification and control sequence validation.
Validate system performance including airflow, pressure differentials, redundancy, alarms, interlocks, and fail-safe operation.
Interface with I&C, controls, and BMS teams to verify correct sensor installation, signal integrity, alarms, and trending.
Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical, airflow, and control-related issues in collaboration with contractors and vendors.
Support integrated system testing (IST) where exhaust and dry mechanical systems interface with process tools, life safety, and control systems.
Track, document, and manage commissioning issues, deficiencies, and punch list items, ensuring timely resolution.
Maintain accurate commissioning documentation, including test results, redlines, as-built verification, and turnover packages.
Participate in startup readiness reviews, cutover planning, and transition to operations.
Enforce EHS, LOTO, and safe commissioning practices, particularly when working with hazardous exhaust systems.
Provide commissioning status updates and technical input during client and project meetings.
Skills Required:Strong knowledge of process mechanical, exhaust, and dry utility systems in semiconductor and mission-critical environments.
Hands-on commissioning experience with:
Process Exhaust and Abatement Systems
CDA, Nitrogen, and Vacuum Systems
Exhaust Fans, Dampers, and Control Devices
Scrubbers and Hazardous Exhaust Streams
Understanding of airflow dynamics, pressure control, redundancy, and exhaust safety principles.
Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, isometrics, control diagrams, and specifications.
Familiarity with controls integration, sensors, actuators, and BAS/BMS interfaces.
Knowledge of applicable codes and standards, including SEMI, ASHRAE, ASME, SMACNA, NFPA, and local AHJ requirements.
Strong troubleshooting, documentation, and communication skills.
Comfortable working in active construction and commissioning environments.
Education / Licenses / CertificationsBachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Process Engineering, or related technical discipline preferred.
