Lead Substation Project Engineer

WSP’s Federal Power and Energy Team is currently searching for a Lead Substation Project Engineer. The ideal candidate will be located in Boise, Idaho;
Honolulu, Hawaii; or Huntsville, Alabama, though remote candidates will also be considered. The Federal Power and Energy Team focuses on mission‑critical facilities and energy infrastructure projects for the Department of Defense.

This role leads the engineering efforts for substation projects across the US and internationally, typically 115 kV, open‑air and GIS, and below projects. Substations often operate as metal‑clad switch gear and control enclosures at 35 kV. The project engineer will perform or lead the design of site/civil, grounding, electrical, SCADA, protection/relaying, lighting, and climate control requirements.

The Lead Substation Project Engineer supports the Department Manager in achieving department goals, maintaining high‑quality standards, and strengthening client relationships.

• Develop and manage project schedules, budgets, and quality.
• Support the Department Manager with relationships with NAVFAC and USACE.
• Perform QA/QC for deliverables.
• Support project reporting and proposal development.
• Contribute to substation equipment specifications.
• Occasional travel and site visits.

• Perform and direct others in the detailed design of medium to high voltage substations, including:
  • One‑line, schematic, and wiring diagrams.
  • SCADA and communications.
  • Station physical layouts, sections/elevations, and control enclosure details.
  • Cable and conduit plans and details.
  • Ground grid, foundations, and structural plans and details.
  • Lightning protection and yard lighting plans.
  • Bills of materials.
• Perform substation studies and calculations (e.g., AC, DC, lightning analysis, voltage drop).
• Specify and select substation equipment.
• Provide construction support and inter‑disciplinary coordination.

• Support the mentorship and training of other team members.
• Understand and adhere to client standards and processes, including NAVFAC/USACE procedures and Unified Facility Criteria (UFC).
• Demonstrate the ability to work in a fast‑paced environment, tracking and organizing many tasks.
• Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct.

• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
• 10+ years of post‑education experience as an electrical engineer providing design deliverables for substations.
• Professional Engineering license (PE).
• Experience in 15 kV through 115 kV substation design and IEEE/ANSI and UFC standards.
• Direct experience working as a consultant on DOD projects.
• Experience filling the role of electrical engineer for several concurrent substation projects.
• Comprehensive knowledge of adjacent disciplines such as electrical engineering, P&C, SCADA, and telecom.
• Knowledge of relevant engineering and electrical construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record‑keeping requirements.
• Ability to perform technical computations and calculations, understanding plans and specifications, making factual comparisons to regulations.
• Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills with both engineering and non‑engineering audiences.
• High‑level self‑leadership with attention to detail, multi‑tasking, and prioritization in a dynamic work environment.
• Works independently with minimal oversight while guiding junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
• Proficient with technical writing, office automation, discipline‑specific design software (e.g., Inventor, AutoCAD Electrical).
• Strong critical thinking and problem‑solving skills to analyze testing results, data collation, computations, statistical analysis, and deliver effective, economical, and logical solutions.
• Effective coordination and direction of subcontractors and others to complete tasks safely and efficiently.
