Systems Engineer, Electrical Engineering
Elevate Energy Consulting supports clients across the electricity ecosystem as we work toward a reliable, resilient, and affordable energy future. We bring expertise in power system planning, design, controls, protection, and operations to solve complex challenges, while helping clients navigate North American regulatory requirements.
Our work spans modeling and studies, protection settings, event analysis, optimization, systems integration, process improvements, and compliance support. We deliver practical, technically sound solutions with a clear goal: to elevate our clients and strengthen the power system for the future.
Position SummaryThis role is responsible for leading and executing advanced power system studies focused on electromagnetic transient (EMT) modeling, studies, and related reliability assessments. The position supports the integration of inverter-based resources (IBRs) and large loads by identifying system risks, conducting studies, developing mitigation strategies, and delivering technically rigorous analyses to inform planning, operations, and investment decisions. The ideal candidate brings strong expertise in power system stability, dynamic modeling, EMT modeling and studies, and translating complex technical results into actionable insights.
Roles and ResponsibilitiesThe Senior/Lead/Principal Engineer shall be responsible for supporting projects and conducting high-quality work related to the following core responsibilities:
- Lead and execute EMT studies to evaluate system reliability, stability, and performance under high I penetration and with the addition of large loads.
- Develop, maintain, and validate detailed power system models across platforms including PSCAD, E-TRAN, PSS®E, PSLF, TSAT; conduct model consistency and accuracy checks across datasets.
- Perform model benchmarking and validation across simulation models; perform I and large load model verification and validation.
- Conduct system EMT screening analyses under a range of operating scenarios to determine where detailed EMT studies are needed.
- Evaluate system strength and grid conditions through metrics such as short-circuit ratio (SCR), interaction factors, and other methods, to determine weak grid conditions or other high-risk areas.
- Identify and assess grid reliability risks including voltage instability, frequency instability, oscillatory instability, and other power quality concerns; determine the need for corrective actions and mitigations.
- Develop and evaluate mitigation strategies including FACTS devices (e.g., STATCOMs, SVCs), synchronous condensers, controls tuning, grid forming (GFM) controls, equipment placement and sizing, network upgrades, etc.
- Perform detailed EMT simulations for high-risk scenarios, validating system performance with and without mitigation measures and refining technical specifications for implementation.
- Analyze and compare alternative mitigation technologies and provide recommendations to support technology selection, procurement, and investment decisions.
- Develop advanced automations to conduct EMT studies and analyze simulation results in an efficient and effective manner.
- Prepare technical reports and documentation of study findings; engage with clients and decision makers with study findings, recommendations, and actionable next steps.
- Support client engagements through technical presentations, review meetings, and other communications; engage in and represent Elevate at industry forums related to these topics.
- Manage project execution across multiple clients including timelines, deliverables, meetings, etc.
Candidates should have the following required qualifications:
- Master’s degree in electrical engineering with a specialization in power systems and EMT…
