Position Overview
A private equity-backed 40-person software company is looking for a strategic, execution-focused Chief Financial Officer to serve as a critical partner to the CEO and executive team during a turnaround. This leader will own the company’s financial strategy, manage investor and board relationships, and build operational discipline across finance, business operations, and key administrative functions. As a core member of the executive leadership team, the CFO will play a central role in stabilizing and strengthening performance, completing the integration of recent acquisitions, evaluating future M&A opportunities, and positioning the business for long-term value creation.
We are looking for a proactive operator who thrives in a turnaround environment, can deliver measurable impact quickly, brings clarity to complexity, and drives company-wide accountability to financial and non-financial metrics.
We are open to a step-up VP, Finance candidate, a junior CFO or a Head of Finance at a smaller organization. This is a hands-on role with a team of one, so it is likely too light for a very experienced leader.
As our Chief Financial Officer, you will:
- Serve as a strategic partner to the CEO and board, shaping and executing the company’s turnaround plan and long-term financial and operational roadmap.
- Oversee all aspects of financial planning and analysis, budgeting, reporting, audit, compliance, and capital allocation.
- Lead the continued integration of recent acquisitions and evaluate future M&A opportunities with an eye toward operational efficiency and business continuity.
- Identify and execute on opportunities to improve margins, cash flow, and cost structure in partnership with the PE sponsor.
- Drive company-wide metric visibility, collaborating with Sales, Marketing, Product, and Operations to ensure cross-functional alignment and accountability.
- Manage and grow the back-office function, including oversight of an outsourced accounting and billing firm, internal HR, and potentially two employees in Rev Ops and IT (Biz Ops).
- Implement systems and processes to reduce manual work, improve data visibility, and support a scalable finance infrastructure.
- Present financial performance, forecasts, and strategic opportunities to the board and PE sponsor with clarity and precision.
- Own company-wide operating discipline, establishing a rhythm of data-driven decision-making, cost control, and targeted growth investments.
- Support future capital events or exit strategies with due diligence and operational readiness.
To be successful in this role, you’ll need:
- 7+ years of progressive finance and operations leadership in technology companies;
SaaS experience required. - Experience leading or playing a key role in a turnaround, restructuring, or performance improvement effort, ideally in a PE-backed environment.
- Proven track record scaling a company from early growth to maturity, ideally including M&A transactions and experience on both sides of an acquisition.
- Strong understanding of revenue recognition, unit economics, and SaaS metrics (LTV, CAC, gross margin, churn, etc.).
- A strategic and hands-on approach; you’re comfortable in the details and in the boardroom.
- Excellent communication skills with a demonstrated ability to influence C-level stakeholders, boards, and investors.
- Experience managing cross-functional teams, including HR, IT, Rev Ops, and outsourced accounting.
- CPA or investment banking background welcome, though preference is given to proven operators who bring business acumen and execution.
Why Now
The company is at an inflection point. Under PE ownership, the business is undergoing a turnaround focused on operational rigor, integration of recent acquisitions, and sustainable, profitable growth.
