Overview
The City of Boise is hiring an Attorney III – Municipal. Whether you are an experienced civil attorney or looking to put your litigation experience to a different use, this role offers a unique opportunity to apply your legal expertise in service of a vibrant and growing community.
ResponsibilitiesYou will provide advanced legal counsel to a diverse range of City departments - from the Airport to the Zoo - supporting essential public services that impact residents’ daily lives. Working with a high degree of independence, you will handle complex civil matters, advise on contracts, ordinances, real property transactions, employment and labor issues, and litigation, and serve as a trusted legal partner to City leadership, boards, and commissions.
You will also play a key role in mentoring junior attorneys and collaborating across departments, helping ensure City operations are legally sound, transparent, and aligned with Boise’s values.
Key Areas of Focus- Contract, code, ordinance and resolution writing
- Real property transactions and land use matters
- Employment law and labor issues, including public sector unions
- Public records law and open meetings laws
- Litigation from case inception through trial and appeal
Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training
- Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school.
- Four years of experience in civil or criminal litigation or municipal governance.
- Knowledge of civil and criminal law, court rules, trial procedure, rules of evidence, rules of professional conduct, parliamentary procedure and legal ethics; contract laws with emphasis on intergovernmental contracts.
- Labor law and working with public sector unions under collective bargaining agreements.
- Employment law and laws such as FMLA, ADA, etc., that affect department decisions.
- Public records law and open meetings laws.
- Tort and claims laws;
International Fire Code and Idaho law regarding disasters and fire services.
Ability to:
- Work independently with little supervision.
- Communicate proficiently verbally and in writing to handle complex cases in state and federal court and to write briefs and other legal documents.
- Review, proof, and critique the legal research and opinions of others.
- Operate a computer with proficiency using contemporary databases, word processing, and spreadsheet software applications.
- Represent the city before outside agencies, communities, and elected and/or appointed officials.
- Perform all essential functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor, and/or manager with or without a reasonable accommodation.
Additional Preferred Qualifications
- Seven or more years of specialized knowledge and experience providing legal representation to local units of government.
- Expertise in civil matters such as land use, civil litigation, public safety, risk management, environmental, aviation, human resources, or contracts and procurement law.
- Licensed and active member of the Idaho State Bar in good standing.
- Valid state‑issued driver’s license.

Physical Efforts & Working EnvironmentWhile performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently lifting/carrying up to 20 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds, pushing/pulling up to 10 pounds and occasionally up to 20 pounds. The noise level is frequently moderate. The employee will sit, stand, walk, and may drive a vehicle as part of this position. Work may extend beyond a typical 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM work week as required.
