Raptor Research Technician – Boise State University School of Nursing, Boise,
Job SummaryA 6.5‑month temporary role supporting a Western‑wide Golden Eagle Nest Survey. Responsibilities include field monitoring, equipment operation, data collection, and laboratory support for research focused on Golden Eagle occupancy, health, and parasite status.
Essential Functions- Apply avian field research skills and adapt procedures to meet project needs.
- Assist with nest camera installation, rappelling into cliff nests, and parasite treatment.
- Conduct field monitoring and data collection to document Golden Eagle breeding status and nest success.
- Band and assess health of nestling Golden Eagles.
- Record field data accurately using paper datasheets and electronic notebooks.
- Review nest camera images, process data, and perform quality control.
- Compile and enter data into spreadsheets and databases; assist with summary reports.
- Maintain field and lab equipment while adhering to safety procedures and project protocols.
- Resolve issues and make working decisions within the scope of responsibilities with minimal supervision.
- Travel to out‑of‑state field sites for extended periods.
- Hike long distances over rough terrain while carrying heavy equipment (often > 50 lbs).
- Drive 4WD vehicles, operate ATVs, and support field coordination logistics.
- Support additional avian surveys or related research activities as needed.
- Knowledge of supervisory and safety practices in field research environments.
- Ability to monitor and follow operational and safety procedures in remote field settings.
- Ability to conduct basic field sampling and accurately record, manage, and review scientific data.
- Effective communication and collaborative teamwork in a field research team.
- Some knowledge of scientific methods.
- Experience with basic multi‑media sampling, monitoring, and research.
- Proficiency in spreadsheet and word processing software, data entry, and report/chart/map development.
- Avian field experience (nest searching, banding, point counts).
- Experience identifying North American raptors in flight.
- Experience locating and monitoring cliff‑nesting raptors.
- Outdoor climbing and/or rappelling experience.
- Wilderness First Aid certification.
- ATV operating experience.
- Google software experience.
Hourly wage: $17.94 – $19.21. Boise State University offers a comprehensive benefits package, including paid holidays, vacation days, retirement fund contributions, medical, dental, and tuition fee waivers.
