The Cost Engineering Team is looking for a Software Engineer II responsible for driving financial visibility, cost efficiency and long‑term sustainability across cloud infrastructure. The role blends engineering, data analysis, and financial insight to ensure technical decisions uphold availability while preserving cost efficiency.
What You’ll Do- Break down larger projects into individual tasks, deliver them in multiple phases, and collaborate with others to ensure timely delivery.
- Support peers and stakeholders in the product development lifecycle by collaborating with product management, design & analytics, articulating technical constraints and partnering on risk‑aware decisions.
- Support operations and availability of your team’s artifacts by creating and monitoring metrics, escalating when needed, and supporting “keep the lights on” & on‑call efforts.
- Contribute to a sense of community on your team through growth and development activities, including participation in the interview process.
- 1.5+ years of software engineering experience.
- Experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems, proficiency in one of Python or Kotlin.
- Familiarity with distributed systems building blocks and technologies such as AWS, MySQL and Kubernetes.
- Experience building cost visibility via tagging and creating cost savings opportunities via cost analysis.
- Strong ability to transform simple problems into well‑tested, extensible code across multiple components.
- Comfort navigating a large code base, debugging code, and providing code review feedback.
- Ownership of personal growth with proactive feedback seeking.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Either practical experience or bachelor’s degree in a related field.
Pay Grade – L;
Equity Grade – 6.
Base pay and compensation details:
- In CA, WA, NY, NJ, CT: $160,000 – $210,000 per year.
- Other U.S. states: $142,000 – $192,000 per year.
Employees typically start at the beginning of the pay range. Total compensation includes equity rewards, monthly stipends for health, wellness, tech spending, and benefits (100% subsidized medical, dental, vision for you and dependents).
Affirm is a remote‑first company; most roles are remote with occasional on‑site requirements depending on responsibilities.
