As Senior Counsel, you will partner with the VP Assistant General Counsel & Asst. Secretary – Transactions & Regulatory, Chief Legal Officer and other members of the Legal, Risk & Governance Services Team to provide legal support and risk management services for Ulta Beauty. In this director level role, you will also interact extensively with Ulta Beauty’s business teams, be responsible for managing outside counsel and participate in team initiatives.

Specifically, this role will work closely with the Company’s marketing (including promotions, advertising, brand protection, agencies, modeling talent and related campaigns), pricing, procurement, and other functional teams to provide legal counseling in support of Ulta Beauty’s strategic initiatives. The role includes management of the company’s intellectual property portfolio (trademarks and patents) and handling of disputes and claims related to pricing and licensing.

The position will report to the VP Assistant General Counsel & Asst. Secretary. The role will be located at Ulta Beauty’s corporate offices in Bolingbrook, Illinois; however, remote candidates with the ability to travel to the corporate offices on a regular basis will be considered.

The ability to develop and maintain positive and effective relationships with business partners at all levels across the enterprise, as well as with colleagues on the Legal, Risk & Governance Services team, is a must. The ideal candidate for this role will have significant in‑house and/or law firm experience supporting consumer‑facing/retail businesses, strong business acumen, excellent counseling skills, the ability to take a strategic and business‑focused approach to complex legal issues, and an entrepreneurial mindset.

• Primary responsibility for all marketing and advertising legal work, including Ulta Beauty’s loyalty program, Ulta Beauty Rewards credit card programs, online and in‑store marketing campaigns, talent agreements, and Company platforms such as UB Media Network and MUSE Accelerator.
• Primary responsibility for all pricing, promotions, and related legal work, including online and in‑store pricing systems compliance, partnering with the business on pricing training and guidelines, and weights and measures enforcement.
• Develop and implement effective strategies for brand protection and trademarks portfolio management (including assistance with Ulta Beauty’s private label collection and brand‑related trademarks filings and claims) and maintain an active role in the innovation team’s initiatives concerning technology development and patents review.
• Counsel business partners, draft, review and negotiate contracts and transactions involving branding agencies, marketplace and other indirect suppliers.
• Advise on legal, regulatory and policy developments in marketing in the retail space.
• Proactively seek opportunities for and implement best practices and process improvements.
• Prepare reports and analyses of legal issues and provide business‑focused counseling on Company initiatives.
• Independently supervise outside counsel and develop and manage effectively outside counsel budgets.

• JD and excellent academic credentials.
