Director of Fleet Maintenance – Bolingbrook, IL
Compensation: $125,000–$180,000
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Director of Fleet Maintenance to lead all fleet and shop operations for a growing organization with a large Class 8 fleet. This leadership role is responsible for driving maintenance excellence, regulatory compliance, cost control, and operational efficiency while positioning the shop as a revenue-generating business unit.
This is a hands‑on leadership role ideal for a proven fleet professional who understands how to balance safety, uptime, cost control, and customer service in a fast‑paced environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead all fleet maintenance and shop operations supporting Class 8 tractors and trailers.
- Oversee asset lifecycle management, preventive maintenance programs, and equipment reliability initiatives.
- Manage departmental budgets, parts inventory, vendor relationships, and outsourced repair activity.
- Develop and enforce maintenance standards, SOPs, and compliance procedures to maximize uptime and safety.
- Ensure compliance with FMCSA, DOT, OSHA, and all applicable regulatory requirements.
- Lead, train, and develop technicians and supervisors, ensuring strong performance, certifications, and accountability.
- Utilize CMMS and operational data to drive continuous improvement, cost control, and performance metrics.
- Manage the shop as a profit center, including P&L responsibility, pricing strategy, and capacity planning.
- Expand external service offerings and build third‑party maintenance business opportunities.
- Partner with Sales and Operations to support customer relationships, service growth, and retention.
- Maintain high standards of customer service, quality workmanship, and timely turnaround.
- Build strong relationships with vendors, suppliers, and internal stakeholders.
Qualifications
- Extensive experience leading fleet maintenance or heavy‑duty truck/trailer operations.
- Proven leadership of multi‑shift maintenance teams or large‑scale shop operations.
- Strong working knowledge of preventive maintenance programs and asset management strategies.
- In‑depth understanding of DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, and related compliance requirements.
- Demonstrated success managing budgets, controlling costs, and improving operational KPIs.
- Experience operating or managing a shop with profit‑and‑loss responsibility preferred.
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Customer‑focused mindset with the ability to support both internal and external service needs.
