OverviewThe Missouri Public Defender System (MSPD) provides legal representation to indigent citizens accused of crimes throughout Missouri. MSPD operates statewide through district offices and employs over 400 attorneys and 700 staff. As a Public Defender Trial Attorney at MSPD, you will represent clients in all phases of criminal matters, advising, investigating, and litigating on behalf of indigent defendants.
Responsibilities- Establish and maintain professional relationships with clients.
- Provide comprehensive legal counsel and guidance at every stage of the case.
- Conduct thorough investigations, including interviews with clients, witnesses, experts, and family members.
- Review law‑enforcement reports and discovery materials to build a defense strategy.
- Communicate progress and development of cases to clients in a clear and transparent manner.
- Appear regularly in court for scheduled dockets and appearances.
- Effectively litigate all aspects of each client’s case at trial court level.
- Conduct legal research on statutes, regulations, and pertinent court decisions.
- Prepare legal documents, including motions, pleadings, and briefs.
- Prepare cases, clients, and witnesses for trial, ensuring a strategic approach.
- Promote and protect clients’ interests through a holistic approach to representation.
- Collaborate with colleagues and support staff to provide comprehensive services.
- Attend continuing legal education (CLE) sessions to stay current on legal developments.
- Licensed to practice law in the State of Missouri, awaiting bar results, or a transferring bar license from another state.
- Passion for criminal defense and commitment to justice for indigent clients.
- Strong communication and advocacy skills.
- Ability to manage a diverse caseload with efficiency and attention to detail.
- Willingness to work in varied settings and adapt as necessary.
- Collaborative spirit to work effectively with support staff and the legal team.
- Openness to continuous learning and participation in training programs.
