As a Design Specialist – Mechanical, you will work within a team of Engineers/Design Specialists in the development of new products. Responsibilities include system‑level design, documentation, component selection, leadership, and continuous improvement across all steps of the product development process.
Key Responsibilities- Work within a team of Engineers/Design Specialists in the development of new products, covering all steps of the formal product development process.
- Perform system-level design with limited guidance, often in absence of specific design standards.
- Participate in the formulation/evaluation of business cases.
- Guide and approve content of design documents and validation plans.
- Contribute to, verify and monitor engineering documentation.
- Apply scientific/engineering principles in the design of machines.
- Sizing and selection of components (motors, sensors, bearings, gearboxes, belts, seals, servo motors, pneumatic and hydraulic components, etc.) and material selection per design standards.
- Provide leadership, mentoring, and training to team members.
- Create system-level concept designs, including function block diagrams, CAD layouts, and functional decomposition.
- Lead and contribute to design reviews and brainstorming sessions; make decisions within product definition and architecture.
- Participate in or lead continuous improvement activities.
- Verify all concept and systems level process steps of the product development and Product Release processes are followed.
- Drive product development process with team collaboration.
- Perform design risk mitigation including participation or facilitation of FMEA.
- Champion product compliance to regulatory requirements.
- Interact across disciplines:
Analysis, Electrical, Software, Fluid Power, Metallurgy, Manufacturing, Validation/Test. - Represent Husky technically to customers, suppliers, and technical partners.
- Represent the Innovation and Sustainability department to internal customers including executives.
- 10+ years of design experience in a relevant industry.
- Excellent verbal and written communication, and strong presentation skills.
- Specialized knowledge of products, tools, standards, processes, and technology within industrial machines and/or plastics processing markets.
- Proficiency in CAD modeling techniques.
- Expertise in calculating design parameters and applying engineering principles to design.
- Strong time management and organizational skills for maximum efficiency.
- Attention to detail in completing tasks.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
- Advanced creativity and innovation skills.
- Strong sense of ownership.
- Advanced understanding of manufacturing and assembly processes.
- Flexible team player.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and work autonomously and as part of a cohesive team.
- Experience selecting and sizing various components (gearboxes, bearings, belts, seals, servo motors, bushings, pneumatic and hydraulics, etc.).
- Well‑rounded – hands‑on mechanical ability and passion for interests/hobbies outside of work.
