Required Shift: 12 Hour rotating shifts. Shift rotates between days (7am-7:30pm) and nights (7pm-7:30am). Monday–Friday.
Job PurposeThe Shift Manager is a shift-based, front-line operations people manager who efficiently improves Quality, Human Safety, and Product Cost Conversion while engaging and developing talent. The Shift Manager is responsible for delivering operational targets and leading teams of, on average, 22 Shift associates. The Shift Manager drives safety, quality, continuous improvement, performance management, associate development, team engagement, and operating results for their assigned area through shift-based leadership of a line or area that exists within a larger Value Stream organization.
This Manager will coordinate short‑term activities of the area within established guidelines and standards to produce the highest quality, lowest cost product most safely and efficiently while partnering with the other members of the 24‑hour Area Managership Team to deliver area continuous improvement and Mars Supply Excellence (MSE) program implementation. The Shift Manager is responsible for building an effective team on his/her shift and in his/her area of responsibility and for managing the training strategy for both the individual associates and the team.
This Manager will implement and enforce established policy and area and organizational strategies.
- BASc Eng, BASc Food Science, or BSc preferred.
- Operational management principles and competencies.
- Understanding of applicable laws (OHS, ESA, MOL).
- Lean business practices.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and drive change.
- Ability to lift/carry (10‑55 lbs) & push/pull (50‑200 lbs).
- Frequent handling/gripping/bending/stooping.
- Ability to work at elevated heights off a ladder or platform, climb stairs, lean over equipment.
- Ability to stand and/or work on feet for extended periods.
- Ability to work in various manufacturing environments and non‑temperature‑controlled rooms.
- Read, write, speak, and understand English.
- Minimum 5‑10 years manufacturing leadership experience.
- Previous people management experience.
- Petfood, food, beverage, or pharmaceutical manufacturing experience.
- Working knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices.
- Conversion – Manage efforts of multi‑line, area, or technology operating teams on one shift to efficiently convert materials into quality products in a safe, secure, and sanitary manner.
- Change Agent – Implement changes in methods, equipment, systems, and organization as needed, using a continuous improvement mindset.
- Mars Supply Excellence – Lead or participate in one or more MSE Pillars; support Autonomous Maintenance (AM) and Autonomous Work Teams (AWTs).
- Area Ownership – Collaborate with the Area Managership Team to create and execute the reliability strategy for the area.
- Coaching – Build operator capabilities and drive accountability in safety, quality, and engagement.
- Line Operations – Coordinate materials, staffing, and resources to support line operation and changeovers.
- Standards Implementation – Ensure standards are implemented on shift and in areas of responsibility.
- Associate Safety – Implement Mars Safety programs and maintain safe working conditions.
- Food Safety and Product Quality – Ensure safe, defect‑free products; own training on HACCP.
- Associate Advocacy – Manage associate relations issues and guide hiring, training, and motivation.
- Engagement – Facilitate and drive a high engagement environment.
- Goal Setting and Measurement – Establish performance standards, measure results, and take corrective action.
- Troubleshooting – Use technical resources on shift for preventive maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting.
- Escalations – Lead on‑shift incident resolution and prioritize resources.
- Communications – Ensure open communication and opportunity for broadening scope of responsibilities.
- Technology Advancement – Advise on opportunities for technological change.
- Operations Strategy – Participate in improvement strategies.
- Recruiting and Onboarding – Partner with Talent Acquisition to recruit, select, and onboard associates.
- Associate Development – Mentor and support development plans.
