Phase 1 Body System Leads - Head and Neck Fractional Honorary Appointment | 1 PA (0.1 FTE) |

Remunerated at the individual's NHS consultant PA rate

University of Greater Manchester Medical School

Are you a consultant clinician with a passion for undergraduate medical education? Do you want to play a defining role in shaping how the next generation of doctors understands and applies clinical medicine? We are looking for outstanding specialist clinicians to join us as Phase 1 Body System Leads at the University of Greater Manchester Medical School.

As we prepare to welcome our second MBChB cohort in September 2026; building on the excitement of our landmark first year, this is a pivotal moment to be part of something transformative. You will be working with a talented team of clinicians and educators in our new state‑of‑the‑art medical school building, contributing your specialist expertise to a curriculum designed to produce compassionate, capable doctors.

About

the Role

You will provide clinical academic leadership for your designated body system unit within Phase 1 of the MBChB curriculum. You will bring your specialist knowledge to bear on curriculum design, teaching coordination, and assessment, ensuring that students develop a deep, clinically relevant understanding of your specialism from the earliest stages of their training.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Coordinating and contributing to teaching delivery within your body system unit, working closely with Clinical Teaching Fellows to plan sessions and ensure full coverage of learning outcomes across lectures, small group sessions, and clinical skills teaching.
  • Leading the development of assessment content for your specialism, including SBA questions and OSCE stations, and maintaining the question bank for your body system.
  • Serving as the clinical expert for your specialism in item review panels and standard setting exercises.
  • Contributing to curriculum quality assurance and working collaboratively with other Body System Leads to ensure integration across Phase 1.
  • Supporting the development and review of learning outcomes and teaching materials to ensure currency and clinical accuracy.
What We're Looking For

We are seeking applications from consultant‑grade clinicians with a substantive NHS appointment in the relevant specialism and a genuine enthusiasm for undergraduate medical education. You will:

  • Hold full GMC registration with a Licence to Practise
  • Membership of a Royal College
  • Have demonstrable experience of teaching medical students or junior doctors
  • Bring in‑depth specialist knowledge and the ability to contextualise it for early‑years learners
  • Have excellent communication and organisational skills and a collaborative approach

Experience of curriculum development or assessment design is highly desirable. A postgraduate teaching qualification or Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) would be an advantage, though neither is essential.

Why Join Us?

The School of Medicine reflects the values of the University of Greater Manchester:

  • Inclusion: Inclusion:
We celebrate diversity and ensure equity in access and outcomes.
  • Compassion: Compassion:
We foster a supportive and respectful environment for our students, colleagues, and communities.
  • Integrity: Integrity:
We hold ourselves to the highest ethical and academic standards.
  • Ambition: Ambition:
We drive innovation in education and healthcare through curiosity and excellence.
  • Partnership: Partnership:

These are roles for clinicians who want to do more than teach - who want to help build something. Our Body System Leads have a genuine voice in how their specialism is taught, assessed, and woven into the broader fabric of the programme. You will be part of a team that values your expertise, supports your development, and shares a strong sense of purpose.
