A Wood Machinist / CNC Operative is required by a family-run manufacturer in Bolton, operating on a full-time, permanent basis. The role offers £15 per hour, dependent on experience, with overtime available. Working on the shop floor of a purpose-built factory, the position involves producing bespoke timber handrails for the high-end market, where each project is made to individual customer specifications.

Responsibilities include preparing raw materials through ripsawing, cross-cutting, bandsawing, and planing exotic hardwoods; laminating materials with adhesives; and loading and unloading the CNC router using air-powered tools. Candidates should possess strong machining skills, attention to detail, and the ability to maintain uncompromising quality standards.

Location:

Bolton Salary: £15 per hour depending on experience, plus overtime

Responsibilities
  • Preparing raw materials – ripsawing, cross cutting, bandsawing and planing various exotic hardwoods
  • Laminating materials – using various adhesives to bond materials prior to machining.
  • Loading & Unloading the CNC router – using air powered tools to quickly and accurately load the machine bed as we produce handrails on the left and right hand sides simultaneously.
  • Operating the 5 axis CNC router – loading pre-defined programs and manually operating speeds, feeds etc
  • Other Duties – General workshop duties, troubleshooting mechanical issues, taking charge of deliveries, quality control with raw materials, tooling re-grind requirements, setting up and using JIGs etc.
Skills
  • Candidates should have some experience in the woodworking industry.
  • Proven troubleshooting ability
  • Knowledge of tooling and/or CNCs preferable, but not essential
  • Ability to work on your own initiative
  • Attention to detail and an eye for quality standards
  • Excellent time management
Education
  • GSCE level in Maths Science & English
  • Vocational courses / apprenticeships in relevant field preferable
Contractual
  • 40 hours per week, Mon-Fri with breaks and lunch
  • Overtime and split shift work likely in future
  • Hourly wage £15 per hour, depending on experience, plus overtime and perks
  • Paid overtime & split shift opportunities likely
