Position Overview
The Paediatric Epilepsy Specialist Nurse will act as an autonomous practitioner with responsibility for providing specialist nursing skills, knowledge and expertise in the care and management of Children & Young People (CYP) in the community setting. The post holder will be a designated non-medical prescriber and act as an advocate for patients at all times whilst safeguarding the delivery of high standards of care in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code (NMC) and national and local guidance on paediatric epilepsy care.
They will strive to initiate nurse-led initiatives that enable children to be cared for at home as an alternative to hospital, managing a patient caseload and using advanced clinical judgement to formulate specialist care plans. The specialist practitioner will serve as a link between primary and secondary care, lead and supervise the workforce in paediatric epilepsy nursing, and be accountable for the effective use of resources.
The role involves managing a complex caseload, providing expert nursing care, leading epilepsy education, supporting newly diagnosed patients with structured education, clinical assessments and personalised management plans, and running independent nurse-led clinics through face-to-face, virtual or telephone consultations.
They will also provide clinical advice and assessments to prevent patient deterioration and avoid unnecessary hospital admissions, offer specialist advice to parents and carers, and deliver education to staff and professionals working with CYP and young people. The post holder will attend and complete appropriate external training as part of their role to progress to Band 7 Epilepsy specialist Nurse.
Key Responsibilities- Act as an autonomous practitioner and non-medical prescriber for paediatric epilepsy care.

- Develop and lead nurse-led initiatives to support home care for children with epilepsy.
- Manage a complex patient caseload and formulate specialist care and management plans.
- Serve as a liaison between primary and secondary care, ensuring seamless communication and care coordination.
- Lead, supervise, educate, train and develop the workforce within paediatric epilepsy nursing.
- Ensure effective use of resources and accountability for clinical services.
- Run independent nurse-led clinics via face-to-face, virtual or telephone consultations.
- Provide clinical advice and assessments to prevent deterioration and avoid unnecessary hospital admissions.
- Offer specialist advice, education and training to parents, carers, children and young people, as well as to staff and other professionals.
- Complete external training and pursue development to progress to Band 7 Epilepsy specialist Nurse.
