DescriptionAdult Education and Literacy instructor for night classes at Farmington Treatment Center in the Department of Corrections. Classes are held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 6 pm to 9 pm, averaging two days per week.
Job SummaryAdult Education and Literacy (AEL) instructors work as a team to teach five subject areas:
Language/Writing, Math, Reading, Science, and Social Studies. These subjects are taught from the level recommended by student assessment, preparing students to pass the HiSET/GED test and obtain a high school equivalency.
Instructors use various teaching styles to meet the needs of all learners, encourage student engagement, and meet performance measures. Lessons are delivered in both individualized and group settings.
Teachers are required to complete 20 professional development hours per year and attend the Pre-certification (PCW) workshop and the Beginning Teacher Assistance Program (BTAP) for AEL teachers within 60 days of hire to gain AEL certification. A mentor is provided for two years. A minimum of 100 instructional hours per year is required to keep AEL certification.
QualificationsBachelor’s degree in any field, with willingness to obtain Adult Education Certification provided by NCSD AEL.
All teachers report to the Adult Education & Literacy Director at Unitec Career Center.
