Salary Scale: $17.00-$21.70
Position SummaryCollects blood specimens from patients vital for the diagnosis and treatment of disease as appropriate for patient age to include neonatal, infant, child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric adult. Runs CLIA waived samples.
Required Qualifications /Minimum Knowledge- High School diploma or G.E.D. or will obtain High School diploma or G.E.D. within 6 months of hire AND
- Prior completion of a certified phlebotomy course or previous lab experience in a healthcare environment and/or 1-year CLIA waived lab experience
- Familiarity with Electronic Health records and medical terminology
- Understand and abide by the Boone County Hospital Standards of Behavior, confidentiality statement, EMTALA guidelines and general hospital policies, procedures, and related practices.
- Follows established departmental policies, procedures, and standard work.
- Works independently, organizing work to meet established deadlines.
- Follow safe work practices.
- Complies with the requirements of laboratory regulatory and accrediting agencies.
- Receives and processes physician requests for testing.
- Properly identifies patients and appropriately labels specimens per departmental and hospital standard operating procedures.
- Collects blood by performing venipunctures using the vacutainer system, syringe method, butterflies, and capillary collections from heels or fingers for testing.
- Educated in appropriate vein selection prior to performing venipuncture to minimize patient discomfort and ensure patient safety.
- Uses excellent customer service skills by greeting patients, identifying self and explaining procedure to patients. Listens to and acknowledges patient concerns prior to performing venipuncture.
- Operates laboratory information system; performs computer data entry and other clerical tasks as required.
- Collect urine drug screen specimens in accordance with federal laws.
- Maintains a clean and appropriately stocked phlebotomy tray and work area.
- Assists in training new employees at the direction of the clinical laboratory director.
- Documents and reports variances to department director.
- Refers questions requiring additional knowledge to laboratory supervisor.
- Performs additional tasks, special functions and/or special projects as assigned.
- Perform CLIA waived tests and result them into the LIS.
