Position Summary

Minimum Qualifications:

A Ph.D. in GWS is preferred; candidates with doctoral degrees in related fields will also be considered.

Areas of Interest:
The individual hired will teach introductory and upper‑level courses in GWS based on expertise. Interdisciplinary teacher‑scholars with the ability to teach introduction to LGBT studies, queer theory, and related courses are especially encouraged to apply.

Description of the Department or Unit

Appalachian State University’s program in GWS is the oldest such program in the University of North Carolina system. It offers an undergraduate major, minors in GWS, LGBT Studies, and Girls Studies, as well as a graduate minor and certificate. The program is committed to interdisciplinary scholarship, engaged teaching, and individualized mentoring that equips students to be critical thinkers, researchers, and communicators with a deep understanding of gender, women, and sexuality issues.

GWS is located in IDS (one of 17 departments in the College of Arts and Sciences). IDS houses BA programs in GWS and Global Studies; individually designed BA and BS programs; an MA in Appalachian Studies; 13 interdisciplinary minors; and the Watauga Residential College.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Standard teaching load: 4 teaching units. Release time may be available for certain service commitments.

Type:
Full Time

Appointment: 1.0 FTE, 9 months per year, starting on or after 08/03/2026.

Physical Demands:
Typical for a professional position at the university.

Salary:
Competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Suggested salary range is available.

ABD Consideration
  • ABD with reduction in rank and salary: ABD will be considered. Evidence of a successful defense must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one‑year fixed‑term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor with a lower salary. If degree verification is obtained before the end of the contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation starting July 1 of the following academic year.
  • No ABD consideration: Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered.
