The Art and Visual Culture degree program is the only one of its kind in the UNC system and is NASAD‑accredited. The department offers BFA and BA programs and provides travel opportunities including study abroad trips.
Minimum Qualifications- M.A. in Art History, Visual Culture, or a related area.
ABD consideration: not applicable; only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree will be considered.
Areas of InterestNo minimum level required.
- Earned Ph.D. in Art History, Visual Culture, or related area by time of hire.
- Demonstrated specialization in any period of global art history/visual culture.
- College‑level teaching experience at the TA level or beyond.
- Ability to teach art history surveys from a global perspective.
- Evidence of teaching effectiveness.
- Knowledge of current trends in the fields of art history/visual culture/visual studies.
- Experience with, or commitment to, educating and mentoring students of varied backgrounds and demographics (

- Teach six courses per year, including art history surveys and, with a Ph.D., upper‑level courses in areas of specialization.
- Courses are taught in person at the Boone campus.
- Potential for participation in department, college, or university service.
¾‑time (0.75) position, 9 months per year. Physical demands: to perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made. Proposed hire date: 08/01/2026. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications. Position is fixed‑term for one year with possibility of renewal based on faculty needs and funding.
