Watauga County is accepting applications for the position of Emergency Medical Technician for Watauga County Emergency Medical Services.
An employee in this role performs skilled work at the EMT level of certification, operating an approved mobile medical unit, rescuing victims, and providing advanced emergency care, including administering life-sustaining treatment on-site and en route to the hospital.
Work involves responding to emergency and non-emergency calls, providing medical treatment to sick or injured persons, and transporting them to medical facilities. The employee must perform according to established emergency medical procedures and techniques, exercising independent judgment to assess patient conditions and apply short-term relief.
Responsibilities also include gathering patient medical and insurance information for documentation, daily cleaning, stocking, and inventory of emergency equipment and supplies, and participating in ongoing training to improve technical skills and ambulance operations. Familiarity with street and road networks in the county is essential for efficient response times. Additionally, the employee will inspect and test ambulances and emergency equipment, making routine adjustments and reporting any defects.
This role involves exposure to typical hazards of rescue work, including potential infectious disease exposure.
Qualifications include a High School Diploma/GED or equivalent, with demonstrated ability to perform the work. A valid driver’s license, EMT certification from the North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services, and current CPR certification are required or must be obtained.
The county offers a benefits package including health insurance, retirement, paid holidays, vacation, and sick leave. The salary grade is 6, at $50,235, excluding scheduled overtime. Shifts are 24 hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
