Primary Purpose Of Position: This position is viewed as a certified Medical Lab Technician. The person in this position will be required to perform moderately complex to highly complex laboratory tests with minimal or no supervision. The various areas of the laboratory in which testing is done are hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, microbiology, immunology, EKGs and phlebotomy. The technician must perform these tests with precision, accuracy and report out results within the laboratory’s established turnaround times.
The person will perform and document all quality control, evaluate any results that deviate from the established normal values, follow all quality assurance procedures and document any corrective action taken when necessary. The person will recognize and follow all safety regulations and adhere to all guidelines set for clinical laboratories by OSHA, CLIA, ASCP and AMT. The person will operate and use all laboratory equipment and testing kits and be knowledgeable in the troubleshooting techniques of each one.
Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from high school and one year of laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Essential Job Functions: Support and perform medical laboratory tests that are used in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. Duties include receiving and procuring specimens, preparing specimens for testing, processing specimens, assisting and performing laboratory tests, interpreting test results and monitoring test procedures, quality control and test interpretation. Also includes the coordination of daily operational functions in the laboratory, training and orientation.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required For This Position: Possess the educational level for med lab technologist or medical laboratory technician. Maintain current level of proficiency. Maintain current appropriate national and/or state certifications.

- Organizes and directs the daily activities of the laboratory; participates with supervisor in work planning, staff training, evaluating work, and counseling. Serves as an expert in directing the work in specialized testing areas.
- Manages laboratory resources including inventory control; manages storage and acquisition of specimens; establishes priorities in the use of resources; may monitor expenditures.
- Researches and recommends purchase of new and/or replacement of equipment and supplies.
- Evaluates and modifies quality control procedures. Reviews work of others for conformance with quality control procedures; maintains quality control records.
- Performs safety checks; ensures compliance with health and safety guidelines. Trains others.
- Performs complex laboratory procedures; recognizes deviations from expected and/or normal results; analyzes results for possible solutions.
- Recommends new test methodologies and/or modifies existing ones to achieve desired results; evaluates new techniques.
- Prepares and analyzes a variety of data; provides detailed documentation and analysis of clinical and research data.
- Provides clinical interface and discusses results with clinicians; answers inquiries about test results.
