JOB DESCRIPTIONOur future pastor needs to know the sheep. To have the ability and desire to know the general overall strengths, weaknesses, traits, opportunities, and culture of the believers at Mount Vernon. A pastor that will personally know individuals in the church in order to cultivate their spiritual maturity and needs. To be able to identify potential leaders and to know how to lead, equip, and protect the flock as a whole.
He needs to feed the sheep. He should have a heart to feed the flock of God through Spirit filled preaching (conveying the original intent of the biblical authors and be able to demonstrate how that applies to the congregation). He should have involvement in personal discipleship (mentoring), and to offer and/or refer for biblical counseling. His teaching and preaching should depend on the Holy Spirit for the purpose of awakening a thirst and love for the Lord Jesus Christ and an ever‑increasing fulfillment in Him.
He needs to lead the sheep and the ministry staff in conjunction with the Elders.
To lead by personal example by:
- Knowing, loving, and a personal reverence for Christ personally.
- Feeding personally on the Word of God and prayer on a daily basis.
- Modeling the heart of the Chief Shepherd and living a Godly life.
- Leading one’s own family in a way that makes much of Christ.
- Supporting and being involved in church functions.
- Discipling one‑on‑one and disciple making.
- Leading by proclaiming, explaining, and ensuring the church’s Purpose/Mission/Values statement is clearly understood and carried out in all areas of church ministry.
- Leading the church to grow spiritually and developing their ministry skills for the work of the ministry (individuals and corporately).
- Leading as a humble servant.
To lead the pastoral team and staff by:
- Serving by leading and leading by serving. By understanding that he is “chief among equals.”
- Recognizing the necessity and positive good for mutual, humble submission to one another in love and respect for each other.
- Encouraging and ensuring mutual growth in the pastoral team through time in the Word, study and prayer into a deeper relationship with Christ.
- Working with our pastoral team to ensure that appropriate pastoral care of the flock is taking place. He will work with our pastoral team to develop and ensure implementation of strategies that fulfill the church’s vision.
- Reporting to the Elders and working with the pastoral team to oversee the ministry and resources of the church.
- Recognizing that we are a multicultural church in membership with a worldwide missions outreach.
- Be a man called by God and evangelical in theology, in accordance with “The Baptist Faith and Message” (2000 edition) and be committed to living and serving in a manner consistent with the standards set forth in Scripture. (Titus 1:8) (Acts 20:28) (Acts 6:4) (Romans 12)
