Position Overview

Professional Nurse – Permanent Full‑time, 40 hours/week; 9‑month position from mid‑August to mid‑May.

The staff nurse, a registered professional nurse, is responsible for providing nursing care to patients and assisting physicians/clinicians at the Mary S. Shook Student Health Services.

Duties include:

• Triage
• Observation
• After hours and limited service hours
• Direct assistance with clinicians
• Immunizations and allergy management

Duties may change based on organizational needs.

Possession of a current North Carolina license to practice as a Registered Nurse.

• Prior experience providing nursing care in a college health setting.
• At least five years of nursing experience, including working knowledge of North Carolina required immunizations and experience working with a college‑age population.
• Recent experience in a direct patient‑care role.

• Ability to work independently using nursing protocols and procedures.
• Ability to multitask in a high‑paced environment.
• Effective communication with students, colleagues, and community stakeholders.
• Proficiency with Electronic Health Record software and computer usage.
• Completion of patient triage, history, medication history, and assessment.
• Accurate determination and administration of needed immunizations.
• Perform nursing functions during clinic care, including obtaining lab specimens, dressings, emergency care, medication administration, IVs, patient education, and direct assistance with clinicians.

Ability to anticipate and meet patient needs; demonstrate compassion, maintain a professional therapeutic relationship; handle crisis situations; evaluate service effectiveness and monitor customer satisfaction.

Knowledge of basic nursing principles and techniques for the specific area of practice, including the nursing process (assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation). Medication administration, patient education, and emergency care; timely and accurate medication administration.

Use of interview techniques to help patients describe symptoms; discern situations; organize information. Communicate information to patients, families, and staff concisely, verbally, in writing, or by demonstration.

40 hours per week, with occasional after‑hours and weekend rotations. The position is nine months in length, running mid‑August to mid‑May.

Requires substantial walking during the day; mental clarity and concentration for medication administration; long periods of sitting while using a computer; ability to change tasks quickly while maintaining calm composure and customer service; clear visual acuity; ability to perform CPR and/or medical crisis skills; provide oral and written reports accurately and concisely.

$44,324 – $47,081 (9‑month annual salary). Pay is commensurate with applicant competencies, budget, equity, and market considerations.
