Job Overview

Ward 9A is looking for a Registered Nurse to join the team as a Junior Sister/Charge Nurse for a 12‑month secondment/fixed‑term. The role is ideal for a Staff Nurse seeking progression to Band 6. The successful candidate will be flexible, a good team worker, proactive and able to drive standards of care forward.

Key responsibilities include deputising for the senior sister/ward manager, supporting junior nurses, and ensuring quality patient care.

  • Provide clinical and managerial leadership to nursing and support staff.
  • Ensure effective running of ward/department in the absence of the Ward Manager.
  • Advise and support colleagues in planning, monitoring, implementing and evaluating care.

  • Lead, manage and develop the team, allocating workloads.
  • Set goals, benchmark standards of care and develop tools to improve service quality.
  • Coordinate patient flow, admission and discharge to meet national targets.
  • Represent the unit and trust to patients, relatives and the local community.
  • Maintain knowledge of relevant health policies and their impact.
  • Escalate concerns to the Ward Manager when standards of care are compromised.
  • Assist in development and implementation of local and trust policies and protocols.
  • Control stock, equipment and promote economical use of resources.
  • Attend corporate groups and professional conferences.
  • Deliver effective communication with multidisciplinary teams.

Clinical Management

Budget and Research Responsibilities
  • Ensure efficient use of resources, manage stocks and equipment.

Person Specification Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse diploma/degree level or equivalent experience.
  • Current NMC registration.
  • Evidence of continuous professional development.
  • Leadership training or qualification (minimum Level 3 ILM or equivalent) or working towards it.
Knowledge & Experience
  • Knowledge of NMC professional standards and practice code.
  • Experience leading a team in a clinical environment.
