Position: Consultant General Haematologist with SI in Lymphoma

Job Summary

This is a 10 PA Consultant Haematologist post at United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust, in addition to any current on‑call commitments allocated to the role. This post is primarily based at Pilgrim Hospital, Boston. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with consultant colleagues to further develop both the clinical and laboratory Haematology services, which operate across the Trust. The role also includes one day per week of travel to Grantham as part of the Trust‑wide service delivery.

Any applicant who is unable for personal reasons to work full time will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.

The appointee will be expected, in conjunction with their colleagues, to provide a comprehensive Haematology service to the United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust.

Main duties of the job

In addition, the post holder will be required to:

  • Undertake such other duties as may be identified to meet the needs of the service
  • Take part in a consultant rota for emergency duties currently 1:11 (weekdays) / 1:12 (weekends) frequency, and to provide, on a reciprocal basis, cover for colleagues during periods of annual or study leave.
  • Carry out teaching duties as required and take an active part in the Postgraduate and Undergraduate Medical Education programmes, in the teaching of junior medical staff and to be involved in the education of technical and nursing staff.
  • Provide professional supervision and management of trainee medical, technical and other staff.
  • Attend regularly department meetings.
  • Have continuing responsibility for in‑ and out‑patients in their care and for the proper functioning of the department.
  • Participate in East Midlands Cancer Alliance and multi‑disciplinary team meetings.
  • Take part in the clinical governance programme.
  • Be involved in research where appropriate.
  • Actively participate in the management of the services of the Care Group.

Initially, the job plan is 10 PAs with a further 0.3 PA available for on call. The detailed job plan is negotiable. These duties will be subject to review and final agreement by the successful candidate and consultant colleagues in the department.

About us

The Haematology service provides outpatient clinics and shares an 18‑bed ward with Oncology delivering Level 2A care. In addition, there is a dedicated 18‑station Chemotherapy suite for outpatients and day cases.

Support is provided by 4 × Specialty Doctors, 2 × FY2, 1 × FY1 and a Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP).

Pilgrim Hospital has a strong identity under‑pinned by a philosophy of personal care to patients and staff. The unit has well‑developed clinical audit and quality assurance programmes. The medical community is encouraged to actively participate in management at all levels and clinical innovation is supported by the management wherever viable.

Job description Job responsibilities

The Haematology Department provides a comprehensive service. This comprises all Haemato‑Oncology, General Haematology, and Haemostasis and Thrombosis referrals for investigation, diagnosis and treatment. There is additional responsibility for investigation and advice on the management of patients with Haematological problems from all other areas. Anticoagulant monitoring is managed within Primary Care.

All bone marrow aspirates and trephines are reported by the HMDS Nottingham.

Inpatient Chemotherapy is only administered at Pilgrim Hospital and Lincoln County Hospital; however, outpatient services are provided at all three sites, which includes Grantham. The Trust’s Cancer Services are part of the East Midlands Cancer Alliance. Intensive chemotherapy for acute Leukaemia and other patients is only provided in Lincoln. All Lymphoma patients are managed by the Haematologists.

Radiotherapy patients are managed by Consultant Clinical Oncologists, who form part of the Lymphoma and Myeloma MDT. Patients from the Grantham area requiring Clinical Oncology…
