Overview
The Department of Classics and Religious Studies Boston invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position to join our faculty beginning September 1, 2026.
Applicants should have a PhD in Classics, and a demonstrable interest in spoken ancient Greek or Latin and Second Language Acquisition (SLA) and the application of the latter to ancient language pedagogy. The candidate will have an interest in outreach to schools, an ability to oversee teaching practica, and be ready to teach graduate-level and undergraduate courses in the Classics and Religious Studies Department.
The successful candidate will also contribute to interdisciplinary teaching in the College of Liberal Arts in SLA by collaborating with departments that specialize in modern languages such as Latin American and Iberian Studies, Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures, and Applied Linguistics.
The appointment requires completion of the doctoral degree no later than August 31, 2026.
Responsibilities- Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the Classics and Religious Studies Department.
- Oversee teaching practica and engage in outreach to schools.
- Collaborate across disciplines in Second Language Acquisition (SLA) and related fields.
- Develop and contribute to interdisciplinary courses and research, including potential cross-listing with other departments in SLA, reception, or digital humanities, and explore applications of large language models to research in Classical languages, pedagogies, and literatures.
- PhD in Classics (or closely related field) by August 31, 2026.
- Demonstrable interest in spoken ancient Greek or Latin and SLA, and the application of SLA to ancient language pedagogy.
- Ability to oversee teaching practica and engage in outreach to schools.
- Willingness to teach graduate-level and undergraduate courses in Classics and Religious Studies and to collaborate across departments (e.g., Modern Languages, Latin American and Iberian Studies, Applied Linguistics).
- Record or potential for interdisciplinary teaching and research (SLA, reception, digital humanities) and interest in applying large language models to research in Classical languages and pedagogy.
