Job Summary
An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and energetic individual to join the busy Andrology team at Pilgrim Hospital as a Medical Laboratory Assistant. The department is part of the Path Links networked NHS Pathology Service offering a wide range of diagnostic investigations on tissue, blood, and fluid samples across Lincolnshire, and is also part of the East Midlands Pathology Network, ME2.
The post is based within the Pathology departments at Pilgrim Hospital, and is 25 hours a week.
Following full training the post holder will be an integral part of the Andrology team within Pathology. The successful candidate will be responsible for receipting and booking in andrology samples for processing. Dealing with telephone enquiries, booking appointments and provision of results to andrology patients, partners and clinicians. Candidate must have good numeracy and literacy skills and be confident in the use of Information Technology.
Previous experience of working within a NHS and/or laboratory, experience of working to tight schedules and standard operating procedures would be an advantage.
- Receipt of specimens, sample identification and labelling including initial investigation of missing/lost or mislabelled samples.
- Entry of patient & specimen data onto laboratory data systems.
- Filing of laboratory reports from reference laboratories.
- Record keeping and equipment checks.
- The use of effective communication skills with Pathology staff and service users.
- Stock management, including the recording of consumable stocks as they are delivered into the laboratory, and advising appropriate personnel when stock levels are low.
- Dealing with telephone enquiries, booking appointments and provision of results to andrology patients, partners and clinicians. To provide advice to patients and service users on patient preparation requirements prior to sample provision.
- GCSE or O level equivalent in 3 subjects, including science.
- IT skills.
- Experience of NHS/Pathology/Laboratory.
