Day Camp STEM Specialist - Brighton

Compensation: $17.50 - $21.00 per hour

Position Summary: Under the supervision of the Camp Director, the STEM specialist provides program leadership, child development, and direct supervision to the STEM program. Responsibilities include developing and renewing the camp STEM curriculum, supporting the overall camp program quality, and ensuring safety and the welfare of campers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Keeps safety of campers as the first priority. Emphasizes personal safety and emotional wellbeing with campers, parents and other camp personnel at all times.
  • Creates and implements a theme‑related STEM curriculum with an appropriate amount of choice, using STEM to educate and promote healthy activity.
  • Documents STEM curriculum and keeps examples for following years.
  • Plans and implements recreational and educational programs that emphasize group participation.
  • Creates an active, engaging environment.
  • Acts as a positive role model, interpreting YMCA values to campers, parents, and staff.
  • Serves as a staff peer leader, setting an example for all other staff.
  • Uses positive, constructive discipline and reinforcement, ensuring all staff does the same.
  • Communicates clearly and concisely their expectations and needs for counselors during their period.
  • Maintains direct communication with supervisors.
  • Reports all accidents/unusual incidents immediately to appropriate supervisors and documents them.
  • Communicates program information, problems, and concerns promptly.
  • Assists with coordination of camp activities and takes ownership of all aspects of the program, including special events, openings, closings, and extended hours.
  • Attends all staff meetings and training sessions, incorporating materials into day‑to‑day interactions.
  • Maintains and cares for all program areas and supplies, ensuring respectful use by campers and taking inventory weekly.
  • Assists with pre or post‑care and/or transportation as assigned, ensuring appropriate check‑ins.
  • Performs other duties as required by supervisor, demonstrating flexibility and willingness to help.
  • Abides by YMCA/DPH/ACA day camp policies, procedures, regulations, and guidelines, seeking clarification when in doubt.
  • Available up to 40 hours per week Monday through Friday, eight‑hour shifts between 8 am and 5 pm.
Position Requirements
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent; some college or degree preferred. STEM education or a STEM degree preferred.
  • Experience or interest in working with children and ability to set appropriate boundaries.
  • Commitment to working with participants from a variety of backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of group process and ability to collaborate with staff.
  • Commitment to carrying out YMCA mission, camp philosophy, and goals.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Current First Aid, Oxygen administration, CPR certifications (and other required certifications for the specific camp).
