Job Overview

The Supertitles Coordinator will collaborate closely with stage directors, music staff, and production teams in the Vocal Arts Department to develop, design, and operate supertitles for both staged and concert productions throughout the year. This role involves working from piano-vocal scores in multiple languages, crafting clear and readable text that aligns precisely with musical timing and dramatic action. The ideal candidate will possess strong musical literacy, being able to follow complex vocal and orchestral cues, as well as strong command of linguistics and translation of operatic libretti.

In rehearsal and performance settings, the Coordinator will attend technical rehearsals, refine the timing and placement of titles, and run the projection system live during performances. This position requires excellent attention to detail, responsiveness to changes in staging or cuts, and the ability to work collaboratively with artistic and production colleagues to ensure a seamless audience experience.

Assemble the calling score for the opera, i.e. mark the score with the location of where each title should be seen. Rehearse with running the titles. Operator will be present at the final run through in the rehearsal room, the sitzprobe, piano dress rehearsal, all orchestra dress rehearsals, and all performances.

Take notes/make corrections as changes arise in the final production process and update the calling score as needed. Careful proofing of supertitles for accuracy. Careful tracking/reporting of hours worked.

Qualifications and Skills

The supertitle coordinator/operator must be able to follow an opera piano/vocal score of each production to accurately call the titles. Some of the music is difficult and the text is in a variety of languages. Facility with various computer programs, e.g. Word, PowerPoint/Keynote. Good communication and organizational skills, the ability to follow instructions, great attention to detail, reliability, promptness. A willingness to work within the department and an attitude that is conducive to an overall positive working environment.

HOURS

NOTE:

there will be approximately 90 hours of work over the course of the academic year. However, the hours are not weekly, but rather, by the needs of the specific productions.
