Job Description: Under general supervision, the Disabilities Counselor/Academic Learning Specialist will coordinate implementation of reasonable accommodations associated with creating access for students with documented disabilities as well as support students approved for learning specialist services, ensuring compliance and equal access for students with disabilities. The Disabilities Counselor/Academic Learning Specialist will review diagnostic information and documentation of student disabilities in relation to learning and access for the determination of reasonable accommodations via engaging with students seeking accommodations in the interactive process.
The Disabilities Counselor/Academic Learning Specialist will use diagnostic information and approved academic accommodations to inform the design and facilitation of both workshops and one-to-one strategy sessions on topics such as core academic skills, strategic reading, effective study strategies, and exam preparation; executive function skills like time management, attention/concentration, personal accountability, and motivation; how to overcome common academic challenges like perfectionism and procrastination;
and other executive functioning skills related to college learning with a goal of enhancing student access to the college curriculum, retention.
The Disabilities Counselor/Academic Learning Specialist with work collaboratively with the Director, Coordinator, and Assistive Technology Specialist in support of student accommodations and will be required during peak times to conduct intake interviews, determine reasonable accommodations based on documentation and student's self-report from the access interview.
Based on the approved accommodations from the interactive process, the Disabilities Counselor/Academic Learning Specialist will generate student accommodation letters and renewal letters and review these accommodation letters with students to ensure student understands their approved accommodations and the processes for use.
Consult with faculty surrounding the implementation of approved accommodations.
The Disabilities Counselor/Academic Learning Specialist will:- Under the guidance of the Director, engage in the interactive process for determining reasonable accommodations by reviewing disability-related documentation and conducting intake interviews with assigned students, generate student accommodation letters and faculty memos.
- Engage with faculty to address questions surrounding the implementation of approved academic accommodations.
- Document student and faculty interactions via internal case management systems.
- Facilitate workshops, accountability programs, and other programs for students and, as requested by the Director and Coordinator of Disability Support Services for BHCC academic departments, co-curricular offices, and partner College offices in support of student access needs.
- Meet one-on-one with students whose individual academic challenges can be better addressed outside of a group instructional setting, researching the disability, accommodations and offering individualized strategy skill building.
- Assist students in developing academic plans and setting academic goals.
- In collaboration with the DSS Assistive Technology Specialist, research, recommend and support student utilization of assistive technologies as assigned/approved for in relation to student accommodations, such as reading comprehension tools, and maintain online tools and programs to support students in the areas above.
- Under general supervision, participate in the streamlining of dept. processes and policies, including meeting with student walk-ins as needed to address questions in relation to their accommodations.
- Participate fully in the College academic community:
Work closely with departmental faculty and academic staff to provide support, training and coaching for students; liaise with Life-Map & Advising and the Counseling Center to target academic support offerings for at-need students. - Maintain records, provide data reports, and perform other activities and duties as assigned.
- Act a primary resource for an assigned caseload of students with documented disabilities and their faculty to support students' accommodation needs via the interactive process to determine reasonable accommodations.
- Support an assigned caseload of students in the management of their program requirements, academic progress in relation to their approved accommodations.
- Act a resource for faculty for an assigned caseload of students to support the implementation of academic accommodations.
- Coordinate development/application of academic strategies in relation to accommodations to promote successful integration of students with disabilities within the college learning environment.
