Director of Curriculum & STEM Engagement

Join UMass Boston as the Director of Curriculum & STEM Engagement. This role co‑directs the Honors College curriculum, especially in STEM, and builds relationships with internal and external partners.

General Summary

The Director will co‑direct the Honors College curriculum, especially in STEM subjects, and establish and maintain relationships with internal and external partners in STEM fields, such as academic departments, science‑related industries, and funding agencies. The incumbent will teach (two courses per year), mentor students, lecturers, and teaching fellows, and schedule courses, including recruiting faculty. The Director will represent the College on faculty, department, and university‑wide committees and sit on the Honors College Governing Council.

The incumbent will work directly with the Dean to ensure the College meets academic rigor goals while staying true to its mission.

Example Duties

  • Participate in shared leadership culture, building supportive working relationships.
  • Teach two courses per year at various levels of the curriculum.
  • Advise and mentor at least 60 students.
  • Recruit departmental faculty for Honors College courses and mentor graduate students and postdocs teaching those courses.
  • Consult with faculty on course development, pedagogical approaches, and innovative teaching methods.
  • Analyze course evaluations each semester to assess course sustainability and put courses through governance.
  • Assist in assessing academic programs.
  • Work with the Dean on short‑term and long‑term course scheduling.
  • Serve as senior thesis director or committee member for thesis related to the Director’s expertise.
  • Chair the university‑wide Undergraduate Research Committee and oversee the research funds application process.
  • Advise on, and help apply for, externally funded STEM‑education initiatives, industry connections, and internship opportunities.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with external partners and sponsors.
  • Support students in senior thesis planning and alternative rigorous projects.
  • Assist the Dean on various issues and serve on the Honors College Governing Council.
  • Preside at Honors meetings and events when the Dean is absent.
  • Participate in freshman orientation, recruitment, and campus visibility events.
  • Serve on university‑wide committees (e.g., Undergraduate Research Committee, Udall Committee, Museum Partnerships, JFK Award, Academic Policy) and chair some.
  • Found, design, and direct intensive summer and spring research programs.
  • Identify research and internship opportunities and support application processes.
  • Support students applying to national and international fellowships (Udall, NSF, Goldwater).
  • Create supportive pathways for students pursuing STEM graduate studies.
  • Help students plan and prepare graduate school applications, including feedback on resumes and statements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. or comparable terminal degree with an active research/publication record.
  • Strong teaching experience with multilingual students at the pre‑collegiate and/or undergraduate level (5‑7 years).

Salary

Grade: 34. This is an exempt union position. All official salary offers must be approved by Human Resources.
