The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) at Boston University's College of Engineering invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in brain health and neuroscience. We seek scholars working in neural interfaces and implantable neurotechnology, neural decoding and closed-loop brain-computer interfaces, and/or AI for health, medicine, and science at the intersection of neural engineering and data science. This position is part of BU's major investment in convergent research, bringing together bold ideas, deep expertise, and perspectives from across disciplines to take on society's most critical challenges.
The position is part of a University-wide cluster hire in Advancing Brain and Cognitive Health, which builds on BU's strength in Health Across the Lifespan. Spanning biology, biomedical engineering, electrical and computer engineering, health sciences, mathematics and statistics, and psychological and brain sciences, the cluster draws on BU's strengths in neuroscience, engineering, computation, and AI to pursue transformative research questions, advance our understanding of neural information processing, and develop new approaches to neurological and psychiatric disease.
We seek candidates with expertise in one or more of the following areas who will complement other hires across the cluster, including faculty working in human imaging, computational neuroscience, rehabilitation, systems neuroscience, and neurobiology:
- Neural interfaces and implantable neurotechnology, including electrode and sensor design, biocompatible materials, high-channel-count recording and stimulation, and - building on BU's strengths in neurophotonics - integrated nanophotonic and optoelectronic probes that combine optical stimulation with electrophysiological recording. Areas of interest include challenges in chronic stability, biocompatibility, packaging, and wireless power that affect the long-term performance of neural implants.
- Neural decoding and closed-loop brain-computer interfaces, including approaches to decoding neural signals into intent, movement, or speech and closing the loop through stimulation. Relevant areas include state-space and deep-learning decoders, adaptive and self-recalibrating algorithms robust to neural drift, and closed-loop co-adaptive control.
- AI methods for health, medicine, and science, including AI grounded in a deeper understanding of brain computation, with potential applications spanning robotics and intelligent systems. Candidates may have opportunities for affiliation with Computing & Data Sciences and connections to BU's broader AI for Science portfolio.
BU BME is a top-ranked department and one of the largest in the nation with 39 tenured or tenure-track primary faculty. We attract exceptional graduate students and faculty at all levels and have strong ties to the BU Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine and other top medical research centers in the Boston area. Research activity led by primary BME faculty exceeds $30M per year.
Our faculty benefit from strong infrastructure, nurtured by being one of only three awardees of a Whitaker Foundation Leading Award and funding from the Coulter Foundation, to translate research advances to societal impact. BU BME faculty lead and participate in many high-profile, inter-disciplinary research centers, including the Biological Design Center, NSF-funded CELLMET Engineering Research Center, BUNano, Neurophotonics Center, Center for Systems Neuroscience, Photonics Center, and Hariri Center for Computing and Computer Engineering.
Since its founding in 1839, Boston University has embraced a mission of openness and access, becoming one of the first universities in the nation to welcome all students of ability regardless of race, gender, or creed. That tradition shapes our enduring commitment to academic freedom, free inquiry, and the robust exchange of ideas. Please visit https://www.bu.edu/values/ to learn more about our shared values.
We seek scholars who will contribute to our community of teachers and researchers through excellence in innovative scholarship, engaged teaching, and participation in the intellectual life of the University. Boston University provides an environment where faculty and students work together across disciplines, perspectives, and experiences to advance knowledge and address society’s most pressing challenges.
