The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) at Boston University's College of Engineering invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in brain health and neuroscience. We seek scholars working in neural interfaces and implantable neurotechnology, neural decoding and closed-loop brain-computer interfaces, and/or AI for health, medicine, and science at the intersection of neural engineering and data science. This position is part of BU's major investment in convergent research , bringing together bold ideas, deep expertise , and perspectives from across disciplines to take on society’s most critical challenges.
The position is part of a University
-wide cluster hire in Advancing Brain and Cognitive Health, which builds on BU's strength in Health Across the Lifespan . Spanning biology, biomedical engineering, electrical and computer engineering, health sciences, mathematics and statistics, and psychological and brain sciences, the cluster draws on BU's strengths in neuroscience, engineering, computation, and AI to pursue transformative research questions, advance our understanding of neural information processing, and develop new approaches to neurological and psychiatric disease.
We seek candidates with expertise in one or more of the following areas who will complement other hires across the cluster, including faculty working in human imaging, computational neuroscience, rehabilitation, systems neuroscience, and neurobiology:
Neural interfaces and implantable neurotechnology , including electrode and sensor design, biocompatible materials, high-channel-count recording and stimulation, and-building on BU's strengths in neurophotonics
-integrated nanophotonic and optoelectronic probes that combine optical stimulation with electrophysiological recording. Areas of interest include challenges in chronic stability, biocompatibility, packaging, and wireless power that affect the long-term performance of neural implants.
Neural decoding and closed-loop brain-computer interfaces , including approaches to decoding neural signals into intent, movement, or speech and closing the loop through stimulation. Relevant areas include state-space and deep-learning decoders, adaptive and self-recalibrating algorithms robust to neural drift, and closed-loop co-adaptive control.
AI methods for health, medicine, and science , including AI grounded in a deeper understanding of brain computation, with potential applications spanning robotics and intelligent systems. Candidates may have opportunities for affiliation with Computing & Data Sciences and connections to BU's broader AI for Science portfolio.
BU BME is a to p-ranked department and one of the largest in the nation with 39 tenured or tenure-track primary faculty. We attract exceptional graduate students and faculty at all levels and have strong ties to the BU Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine and other top medical research centers in the Boston area. Research activity led by primary BME faculty exceeds $30M per year.
Our faculty benefit from strong infrastructure, nurtured by being one of only…
