Our Façade Engineering practice provides consulting services to architects, building owners, and developers. Our suite of specialty analyses helps solve complex design challenges, improves constructability, maximizes energy efficiency, and increases security. We offer a range of services for the full building life cycle to help clients execute ambitious architectural visions. Our consulting services include materials research, specialty analyses, detailed design, engineering and construction support, and glass and building envelope failure investigations.
In the technology-driven cladding industry, innovation comes with the territory. Nearly two-thirds of the building envelopes we design and engineer are based on customized systems that involved unique combinations of materials.
We have an opportunity for a Project Engineer to join our Façade Practice. This individual will be responsible for the engineering and detailing of façade and other building envelope systems. This includes running relevant analyses, calculations, materials, and systems research, and coordinating project work with the team. Must be conscientious and creative, detail-oriented, and professional with attentiveness to client communications.
Responsibilities- Perform building envelope analyses using specialized software (e.g., structural loading/deflections, thermal analysis, condensation risk, geometry).
- Research materials and systems to evaluate project suitability and interpret building codes, design documents, and specifications.
- Prepare and review engineering calculation packages for façade/building envelope systems and develop detailing in both 2D and 3D formats for clear client communication.
- Support construction administration, including responding to RFIs, managing submittals, attending construction meetings, performing site inspections, and preparing field reports.
- Coordinate project work with internal and external stakeholders—design architects, structural engineers, conservators, testing labs, owners/representatives, contractors, and other Thornton Tomasetti offices.
- Support team leadership by facilitating clear communication, contributing to guidance for project teams, and fostering strong professional relationships.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, structural focus. Master’s degree preferred.
- 5+ years of experience, preferable with engineering of façade systems.
- Professional Engineer and/or SE License preferred.
- Direct knowledge of building envelope systems, including roofing and waterproofing, glazing assemblies, and claddings and experience with large‑scale projects.
- Proficiency in Bluebeam, Revit, AutoCAD, and analysis tools (STRAND, Mepla, etc.).
- Experience with Sketchup, Rhino/Grasshopper, Python, THERM, WUFI is preferred.
- Ability and willingness to travel within the US and internationally.
The rate for this position generally is $95,000 - $110,000. This range is a good faith estimate provided pursuant to the Massachusetts Equal Pay for Equal Work Act and Equal Pay Transparency Rules. It is based on what a successful Massachusetts applicant might be paid and assumes that the successful candidate will be in Massachusetts or perform the position from Massachusetts.
Similar positions located outside of Massachusetts will not necessarily receive the same compensation. Actual pay rates may vary from the range, as permitted by Massachusetts Equal Pay Transparency Law.
