Structural Engineer Bridge Transportation –
Senior Structural/Bridge Engineer (Hybrid) at VHB.
The structural engineering group at VHB designs complex bridge and interchange projects, rehabilitations, inspections, pedestrian walkways, and transit stations. VHB recently won the 2025 Best Managed Company award. The Senior Engineer will lead planning, analysis, design, and detailing of bridge and transportation structural projects while mentoring technical staff.
Responsibilities- Manage, develop, organize, and implement structural planning, analysis, and preliminary and final design documentation for bridge/transportation projects.
- Prepare proposals and contracts; participate in project decisions regarding technical approach, costs, and scheduling.
- Maintain client relationships, visibility, and business development.
- Direct and mentor team members on design plans, technical oversight, specifications, design calculations, load ratings, cost estimates, reports, and final bid packages.
- Perform project and task management.
- Review plans, specifications, reports, and analyses to meet scope, schedule, cost, and quality requirements.
- Extensive knowledge of structural engineering concepts, practices, and procedures.
- Excellence in verbal presentations and technical writing.

- Knowledge of structural engineering software (AASHTOWare, LARSA 4D, MDX, SP Column, Merlin
DASH, Mathcad). - Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D, Micro Station v8, and Connect is a strong plus.
- 8‑11 years of experience.
- BS in Civil Engineering (structural emphasis preferred); 1‑2 years of experience may substitute for a master's degree.
- PE license required.
- Experience completing transportation studies, design reports, final design documents, and developing contract plans in compliance with AASHTO & DOT standards.
- Independent experience developing bridge design and detailing (steel, concrete, prestressed concrete) and seismic analysis.
Boston/Watertown, MA: $115,000‑170,000
Worcester, MA: $105,000‑160,000 (final compensation based on qualifications, education, and experience).
