Position: Senior Traffic Engineer (Civil Engineer III)

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist the Traffic Design Supervisor in all aspects of Traffic Engineering design and review activities.
  • Review engineering plans, designs, specifications, and other documents for MassDOT transportation projects, and Access Permit Plans in accordance with sound engineering principles and practices, and applicable regulations and standards, to ensure they conform to MassDOT standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Review transportation analyses, planning studies, intersection control evaluations, functional design reports, and similar traffic studies for MassDOT transportation projects, Access Permits, private developments in the Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act (MEPA) process, etc. Identify any traffic or safety issues and ensure adherence to State guidelines and schedules.
  • Assist in the design and review of traffic and safety components of MassDOT in-house design projects.
  • Supervise the activities of subordinates in the Traffic and Safety Engineering Section to ensure efficient and timely completion of assignments.
  • Plan and assign work to subordinates according to the nature of the job to be accomplished. Review the performance of subordinate employees in accordance with EPRS.
  • Review design comments, letters, and technical memoranda prepared by subordinates to ensure accuracy of technical details and overall quality.
  • Prepare and/or review plans, specifications and cost estimates for engineering projects.
  • Participate in the planning, design and technical review or capital budget building projects.
  • Review the work performed by contractors on traffic projects.
  • Attend various project meetings, including coordination, scoping, pre-25%, alternatives, comment resolution, etc.
  • Perform other work as required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with project design and/or review.
  • Experience in traffic signal design and operation.
Unit E Sign-On Bonus

This position is eligible for a five-thousand dollar ($5,000) signing bonus (“Signing Bonus”) if you are newly hired rent MassDOT employees are not eligible for the Signing Bonus. The Signing Bonus will be paid in two parts:
1) $3,000 (less applicable taxes) included in the employee's first paycheck.
2) $2,000 (less applicable taxes) after the successful completion of the employee’s probationary period.
