A Day in the LifeMedtronic’s Surgical Operating Unit is seeking a motivated Senior FEA Modeling Engineer to accelerate development of innovative surgical instruments. In this impactful role, you’ll leverage advanced computational modeling to predict and optimize mechanical performance and tissue interactions, directly contributing to improved surgical outcomes for patients worldwide.
In this role as a Senior FEA Modeling Engineer in the Surgical Operating Unit, you will collaborate with design engineers, tissue researchers, and other modeling engineers to develop physics based computational models to help bring exciting surgical instruments to market.
Responsibilities- Develop and validate finite element analysis (FEA) models for surgical device design, evaluation, and optimization.
- Use Ansys Mechanical, Ansys Fluent, and Ansys LS-DYNA to model forces, deflections, stress, strain, temperatures, and vibrations in complex assemblies and biological tissues.
- Import, review, and optimize CAD models using Creo.
- Perform model validation through hand calculations and correlation with physical testing.
- Partner with design engineers, tissue researchers, manufacturing, and regulatory teams to define modeling requirements and solve challenging problems.
- Prepare clear technical reports and presentations to communicate modeling results and recommendations to internal stakeholders.
- Provide technical input supporting submissions to regulatory bodies and government agencies.
- Troubleshoot modeling issues by engaging peers, technical support, and leveraging prior experience.
- Develop and deliver training sessions for staff on design-analysis tools and methods.
- Contribute to the invention of new designs and techniques recognized as advances in the medical and scientific community.
- Requires a Baccalaureate degree and minimum of 4 years of relevant experience OR Master’s degree with a minimum of 2 years relevant experience OR PhD with 0 years relevant experience.
- Experience in the medical device industry.
- Familiarity with typical medical device materials.
- Knowledge of Six Sigma practices and statistical analysis methods.
- Experience with Creo CAD software.
- Exposure to intellectual property development or scientific publication.
- Demonstrated experience performing FEA for device design, optimization, verification, method validation, and regulatory submissions.
- Proficient in Ansys Mechanical, Ansys Fluent, and Ansys LS-DYNA.
- Experience modeling biological materials and tissue-device interactions.
- Ability to manage and organize large volumes of data and calculations efficiently.
- Quick learner, adaptable to new tools and technologies.
- Skilled in Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and MS Teams.
- Programming and scripting experience (e.g., Python, MATLAB, or similar).
