Job Title

Automation and Controls Specialist

Job Overview

CDM Smith is seeking an experienced Automation and Controls Specialist to join a motivated team of Automation professionals in the Northeast region. The successful candidate will design and program control systems for Water/Wastewater clients, develop detailed specifications, create Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), and write comprehensive control descriptions to ensure safe and efficient system operation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop automation solutions under senior level oversight.
  • Program, test, and commission SCADA systems using PLC and HMI packages (Rockwell Studio 5000, Schneider Electric Unity, GE iFix, Rockwell Factory Talk, AVEVA InTouch).
  • Configure SCADA servers, workstations, networks, and wireless communication systems.
  • Create SCADA reports and perform field acceptance testing (FATs) and field inspections.
  • Design basic to complex instrumentation and control system components, prepare PIDs, architectures, specifications, and control descriptions.
  • Prepare control system preliminary design reports (PDRs) and review shop drawings.
  • Respond to contractor RFIs under supervision and independently develop Operations & Maintenance manuals.
  • Estimate project budgets, prepare proposals, and support client presentations.
  • Travel to project sites for client meetings and on‑call support.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent experience).
  • 7 years of related experience in automation and controls.
  • Proficiency with PLC and HMI programming.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to mentor junior staff.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Water/Wastewater instrumentation & control projects.
  • Experience with in an engineering or construction firm.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience.
